December Trip.....

Well day#1 on the books yesterday. Three hunters and the count from yesterday was only two roosters. Lack of roosters was not the problem, either bad shooting or educated roosters getting up to far ahead. One good thing is we lost count on the number hens yesterday. Hopefully the winter stays mild and we have a normal spring for nesting. Fall 2014 could be better than the last couple of years if the stars line up.

Yesterday's weather was sunny and 46 degrees. As I am writing this post it's -7 degrees with 18mph wind gusting to 28mph. Wind chill values are -30 degrees. The wind is going to subside later this afternoon. We are taking a down day and will have to make a Cabela's run to help fill the time.

Tomorrow's forcast is 24 degrees and sunny. We will be back at it 10am tomorrow. I will try to post again later in the week once we get a few more days of hunting under our belts.

One other thing snow has not been any issue. Not much left on the ground in the area where we are hunting......

Good luck! You are wise to take today off. Fortunately you have a Cabelas very close. :) I'll be heading to Redfield in an hour to have Christmas with my daughters and grand kids. Roads are not good so we will just have to see how far we make it.

Sunday

George,

Well I couldn't take it this afternoon. Wind laid down to 5mph and the temp climbed to 1 above by 2pm today. My wife and father weren't really willing to hunt. We headed out and found a small CREP area north of the house. To make a long story short about 45 minutes later with family watching from the truck I had my three bird limit. The other bright spot was the dog work was exceptional.

I guess it turned out to be an alright day after all..... Weather outlook for tomorrow looked great should be able to run into some birds.

We bailed out of Chamberlain on Saturday morning, in advance of the impending weather. Man it was hard to leave with the temps and the wind like they were.
Pretty sure Im calling it a season with regards to pheasants, and digging out the fishing gear..

Theres still plenty of birds left. I was having no trouble finding them, or even bagging them, Im just not mad at am anymore..;)

With regards to your solo hunt, thats the way it goes more times than not for a solo hunter.. One person, and a dog. No one to worry about, no need to think if youre going to go left or right, or even backwards, just follow the dog, and things fall into place.
