December roosters

Even though its only late Nov I got a taste of the old Dec roosters this weekend. Whats a Dec rooster you ask--well there are two types, one that holds so tight in HEAVY cover that the dog has trouble getting into that cover to flush it (for you guys with the pointy type of dogs--you cant even kick them out of it). Then there is my favorite--the wild boys that run run run and then flush--saw one this weekend run out on to a harvested soy bean field and only fly when the dog had closed to within about 4 feet, had another run across the road at an intersection and proceed to keep running down the cross road and over the hill about 200 yards away, kinda reminded me of a Airzona road runner.

I just love this time of year:D:D:D

We hunted ND last year the week of Thanksgiving in a foot of snow and minus 11 degrees and did the birds ever hold tight. No worry about runners. I had one that its wings hit both legs as I kicked it out of the grass (too bad it was a hen). We limited out two days straight (6 hunters) in both ND and SD. Other than putting up with the weather it was a fantastic hunt. Hoping for more of the same this year.

I like going after a cold spell. Many pheasants have learned to get away from hunters and other enemies by flying to islands and wet stuff. Once there's solid ice, makes for some good late season hunting.

You just can't beat those December roosters. 2-3 year old cock birds. They ARE hard to bag. Often running then flushing well out of range.

Nevertheless it's a beautiful site. Despite not getting a sliver of a shot opportunity it's worth seeing those bad boys waiving you "good bye" with their long fully grown in tail feathers.

If you manage bag one it's very rewarding.

Unless the ice isn't thick enough. That's always ugly!

I'm doing my December hunt! Short, 4 days, but always fun chasing December Wyoming roosters!

Lol.....ugly it is. I broke through (AGAIN) last December in SD. Fell in up to my chest. As long as I kept hunting I stayed worm but it definitely put a damper on my day!

Ice was plenty thick, but I insist on finding the one thin spot of ice:eek:

Yup I bet most late season pheasant hunters have broke through ice a time or two. Brrrrrr.

Watch out for those muskrat runs.
