Darn Weather

Got up early this AM thinking we might get some cold weather precip. Woke up to fog, but nothing else. I've had enough solo hunting in normal conditions for the week. The boys haven't wanted to pheasant hunt a single time since our visit to SD...

The eldest and I have seen deer both times we've been out during this late doe season. He missed a 100 yard shot with 5 minutes left of shooting time. He tried to get the jump on the recoil and shot under her belly. Last night we parked the truck in the wrong place and 5 of 'em hung up at the neighbor's fence. They were standing there looking at my truck as we crested the hill:eek: Tonight we'll be parking in a different spot and hoping for some action. I really don't like deer hunting, but we could desperately use the cheap meat; problem is, it ain't so cheap when you gotta make a 40mi round trip 3 times to fill your tag:p

Yeah I was hoping for some snow this morning too. But, don't think it would matter, I can't seem to even find a pheasant of my own to shoot this year. Shot plenty of quail this year and even a few ducks.

I may have to load up some goose decoys and go out and run some traffic this afternoon.

Bilbo Baggins II and I returned from Kansas a few days ago. We hunted eight or nine of my favorite spots and never saw a track in the snow so I generally only made one pass. Ended up finding all the birds in the county in one dirty milo field. We filled out in about 45 minutes. Only saw one hen. All of these roosters were three year old birds and huge. I took a photo of little Baggins and he could only hold two roosters at a time. So far this year I only took eight shots and they were all head shots so eight nice roosters in the bag. The other four birds were all young birds from this year's hatch. I only have about six hours of actual field time since I came down with some sort of disorder. Hands, arms, shoulders are numb and in 24 hour constant pain. Taking meds but no help yet, only making me dizzy all the time. Almost cannot touch a shotgun, much less carry a loaded firearm in the field. Legs are fine.

Tell me about it. My shooting on pheasants hasn't been this bad since I started buying my own shells. Quail haven't been any trouble (usually the other way around:confused:). Every time a pointed rooster gets up I "find" the bird before he's gotten far enough away, pull my gun away from my shoulder, then mount it again and miss...its like a curse. Its the silliest thing, but its in my head and I'm in a slump!

Next year I may just offer to come and take candid photos of others on their hunts at no cost to them. If a shotgun and a camera end up having the same end result in my hands, why shouldn't I carry the lighter of the 2?:D

I am glad I am not the only one shooting this way this season. Quail I have been absolutely on target...the roosters have really humbled me though. ended up new years eve missing one with 10 minutes in the day left....so go out for redemption new years morning and 15 minutes into the first hunt I blew 3 shots on an excellent nose tip flush. I am pretty disgusted with myself and can only imagine what my first year springer is thinking about me!!

My son, his friend Ben, and I tried out the goose decoys this morning Duckn. Might as well stay in bed. There were geese by the thousands and only 1 gave us a look, a speck! They're closed:) It about clipped our nose hairs! The rest stayed 100-300 yards up no matter what. Got a crick in my neck from rubber necking!

KB you have the yips! Concentrate on what you're going to do as soon as the dog points and keep your eyes up, not in front of the dog. I'm a streak shooter too. Shoot pretty good without witnesses! An audience kills my mojo!

Bilbo, careful, you teach him too much too soon and he'll start leaving you home and taking his friends:) Nice gift to give a son! Congrats!!!

Our little group of four went out once again thanks to the promise of snow. Never saw a flake until we were almost back home.

However, the action was pretty good. We ended up shooting 7 roosters. We saw three quail in the first patch we walked, and had a bunch of hens flushing wild. The next patch, we saw 40 plus, blowing out ahead of us, behind us, around us, but bagged three.

It was fun to see that many birds again.

If we get snow I'm gonna have to get the lab out tomorrow. Gotta kill a phez before the season is over!

Go get 'em Duckn66! The conditions are great to pick up a rooster or 4 today:thumbsup: The conditions are also good for staying inside, learning the bible, and enjoying some fellowship:)

I had plans to hunt on Saturday. There were going to be perhaps 6-8 of us. Unfortunately the weather forecasters successfully convinced all the adults invovled that travel was a BAD IDEA on Saturday. And by adults I mean our wives. So, we stayed home and woke up to dry, clear streets and sunshine until about 4:00 or so in the afternoon. If there's any consolation, radar showed off-and-on precipitation all day around our intended destination. Rescheduled for this coming sunday, weather permitting.

The mid season slump continued. I ended up with 2 but missed a couple of easy ones.
I really wish I would have went with the camera. There were a couple of hens that were dug out that would have been perfect. And then the shot of a lifetime. After a 40 yd dash Chip put up a rooster ,caught feathers at what seemed like 8 ft. in air. And hung there tailfeathers fluttering down. :(. Words can't describe it, it was just awesome.

I know the feeling about the weather! We had a pretty solid day despite some really skittish birds and the snow starting just as we were unloading the truck. We even managed to get back in time to keep Doc's wife happy so she could catch the basketball game she wanted to watch. We gave it some serious consideration about rolling back out.
