Cuts on pads...

Just out of curiousity, how do you guys handle these? Never really had an issue until recently. Luke has managed to cut his pad pretty good twice in the last month.

Really all I'm asking is what do you guys put on there? Any particular brand of stuff that works best? He won't do the boots thing, so more or less looking for some sort of "Pad-kote" or "Tuff-foot" type of stuff. In the past super glue has always done the trick on smaller slices. But when it gets too much bigger super glue isn't gonna cut it.

where are you running him when he gets cut up? i would sure try to avoid that area, getting multiple cut pads is pretty unusual, not much to do after the fact, but let him heal, with some time off. no pad treatment is going to be foolproof either, might help some, but probably not the answer.

this was just in a sunflower field.... More or less a string of bad luck I'm gonna guess.

Run the dog on a gravel road or something like it. The gravel will toughen up his pads. My whole yard area for my dogs is gravel, just for this purpose. Blacktop will not do it have to be some type of real gravel..........Bob

I was watching a Pheasants Forever show the other day and they were talking about cut pads. I recall them using a bit of superglue, and covering the pad with a piece of moleskin just a hair larger than the pad itself on all sides. The guy demonstrated by tucking the 'edges' of the moleskin down around the edges of the pad so there weren't loose edges to snag on anything and peel off. they finished off the piece by suggesting to cover it with a boot and you're all set to get back in the field. not sure, but maybe just to heal around the house you may want to try the moleskin?

sort of sounds like your dog ran into some broken glass

there are places I hunt I work to keep mine out of- old dumps of a sort

if the pads are in reasonable condition you don't get many cut pads
should heal up pretty quick without any vet needs- imo

does anyone recommend using maybe Dog boots? sophia, my GSP has boots to wear when we go hunting... i hate to see her get thorns or cuts such as above OP stated... i mean cause of infections isnt a good thing either...

but i dont think you want ot have your dog on those boots all day long every day even on the off season.. Sophia will wear hers when hunting.. but at home.. she wont...

Ok so maybe this is being taken wrong.... he cut his pads twice in a couple weeks. I have had no problem taking care of them, he is on a gravel road numerous times a week. Which does help alot I noticed.

I was just curious if there was any particular product anyone used that they felt worked well.... More or less for a quick fix to continue hunting if I'm out in the field for a weekend or would like to hunt him again the next day etc...

Obiously right now I'm ok with him just takin it easy for the rest of the week as I'm not to pressed to go hunt anything. But could be a different story in a couple months.

The moleskin protection was the video tip I saw during the Pheasants Forever show the other day. Their point was to let you do the field dressing, and to get you back out and going. I'll see if I can find it online anywhere. It was one of those brief dog training tips that are sponsored a couple times during the show.

c_d, I've seen that tip on the show. I wasn't really directing that at you, more or less the answers about how to "prevent" this.

I'm not looking for how to prevent this, I'm going on a string of bad luck here thats all. he's spent 150 days in the field, gets cut twice... not to worried about it. Just looking for a quick fix. So thanks for bringing up the moleskin trick.

I was just hoping someone else had some first hand experience with some other "quick fixes" while in the field.

quick fix in the field- take off your socks and put both on the cut foot- if you happen to have some tape you are set- if not- tear off some strips from your tee shirt or shirt and use to bind and secure the socks- usually the sock is long enough you can turn part of it inside out- thus have a double sock- 2 of those will make a soft foot landing

I've done it- because I didn't think I could carry the dog all the way

Spence how's it going? There is no quick fix. Our vet has had us use that new skin band aid stuff at wal mart. but you have to brush it on a couple times a day and hold it till it drys. It still took a few weeks to heel on a bad cut. that was about an inch long and a half inch deep on the main pad. Could not run the dog at all. Sorry man.:(

hey, no worries. sounds like some bad luck for sure. Hopefully some other tips and tricks come up. Always good to have a couple options to fix a problem. There are obviously many folks out there with more experience than me. I'm just armchair quarterbacking here :D

moleskin sounds like a great idea, i have used it to cover blisters when on a hunting trip when i could not take a day off, the stuff works great!
