The "Covey Rise" magazine reports that approx. 38000 offers of nearly 3.8 million acres were submitted for CRP nationwide during the last signup. 2.8 million were accepted, which was the maximum allowed, the cap is 32 million, with 29.9 acres in the program, allowing for the continous CREP signup. Apparently even in these times of record commodities prices there are still those willing to enroll. In another release eight new states, California, Georgia, Montana, New Hampshire, Texas!!!, Virginia, Wyoming, and ( wait for it......) Hawaii, have joined the Voluntary Public Access-Habitat Incentive Program. They are joined by the Yakima Tribe of Washington, ( is a reservation officially part of the United States? or only when they want to be?). Looks like most of the pheasant belt states are included in VPA-HIP. Funding set for 17.8 million this year, with a total of 50 million available in the 2008 farm bill which is appropriated through 2012. Good news for some of us in states where public access is limited, and lots of expansion available to those states like Kansas and Nebraska, who have programs now!
