Its not the first drought to ever hit southwest Kansas. This one will end as they all do and the birds will recover.
It's depressing I tell you. Started last year Opening Day and it continues into this summer. I have family ground in SW Kansas that we hunt every Opening weekend and very rarely see another hunter. It used to be good habitat and seeing 500 pheasants in half day hunt was the norm. Last year Opening Day it was so bad we left after two hours of hunting and moved North to hunt Public Ground. I never thought I'd see the day I leave private ground in SW Kansas to hunt Public ground!!! Looks to be even worse this year and for a guy that loves to Pheasant hunt, it sucks. You can say it's all about being out there with the dog, but not having cover and the hope of getting into birds slim to none, it blows! I usually pheasant hunt every weekend, last year I took some weekends off and it was so bad I even turned to goose hunting! Not sure what we're going to do this Opening Weekend, maybe a trip to South Dakota. I'm afraid the glory days of SW Kansas may be over. I hope I'm wrong and I hope it rebounds and my kid can hunt Grandpa's farm and see 500 birds in a half day, but I don't think it's going to happen. Sorry for the rant, I'll climb off the ledge now.
:10sign::10sign:I agree....things run in cycles and this drought will end and birds #'s will rebound some.....My larger concern is loss of habitat from clean farming, high grain and land prices and lack of interest in Washington.
Please do not take my note about high grain / land prices out of context.....
I respect those how try to make a living from the land and it is their's to do as they see fit.....after all we all must make a profit where we can....
Having said that:
I would like to say that for future generations.....we all need to consider the total effects of clean farming, removing all tree lines and draining wetlands to grow more crops.....I hope that common sense will prevail and conservation will always have strong support from farmers and hunters alike.
