Crop Progress

Any thoughts on where harvest will be by the opener. Looking at the USDA progress page it appears as though things are way behind normal.

As of Oct 22 KS corn harvest was 65% vs 78% 10 yr avg, soybeans 56% vs 55% 5 yr avg. NW KS is furthest behind on corn, but 10 day looks pretty good and it doesn't take nearly as long to cut as it used to back in the days of 4 row corn heads.... You'll hunt less wheat stubble this and next year as wheat acres continue to decline in favor of corn and milo.

Below freezing in KS friday and Saturday should help finish out the beans, and make for less green stuff opening weekend.

Farmers out where I hunt close to dodge are pretty far behind, and the Milo that is cut will probably not have very good cover, as they've had a tremendous amount of wind as well as the hail. They are having to cut pretty low to pick it up off the ground.

That came from someone I know who's family farms out that way. Not sure exactly where but somewhere near there and I was a few weeks ago.

Ten day forecast for Dodge City shows really no chance of precipitation, so expect scenting conditions to be poor. With the recent hard freezes, I expect that most of the milo will be harvested by the opener.

Had to go to Garden City today. From about Ingalls west there was some snow on the ground. Dodge didn't get any of that.
