Cost of Shells

I have not bought shells in awhile, seems a box of shells cost a lot more than it did a year or so ago? Picked up some high brass 20 and they where 18 bucks a box! I know prices do not go down but I do not reacall spending more than 10 bucks a box or so the last time I picked some up.

It averages out... they phase out CRP and there are fewer birds to shoot at... so the per trip shell cost stays the same.

I have personally thought about learning to shoot better so I could hit more than one out of ten shots... but that just seems like so much work.:p

Winchester Superhandicap 7.5's - $8 a box and they drop pheasants. Of course I have a box or two of the high dollar ammo but seldom use them as I have had great luck with the SH's. I load the SH in the first barrel and a prairie storm in the second. So far so good. If nothing else, it will cut your cost by 1/4-1/3 by using this combo.

When I dove hunt I use the cheapest loads I can find. They work just fine, but when it comes to pheasant and how hard it seems for me to find one, I want to throw the best load I can at them. I guess it just makes me feel better. Would hate to not knock down a rooster due to me being cheap. I am sure it has more to do with my shooting but I think you get what I am saying.

I saw that prairie storm in the store, did not cost much more. I was thinking of trying some of that when my current supply of ammo runs out. I prefer to use Fiocci Golden Pheasant but can not find any here in Colorado Springs.

I have good luck with the Fiocchi and find them frequently at Gander Mtn. Good Luck.

Federal Pheasants Forever Load

Just picked up 4 boxes of the Pheasant load by Federal. First year out but willing to try. They are 4 shot with 1500 FPS. I'm a newer hunter so need all the advantage I can get.

When I calculated the difference in cost per FPS between this shot and the Fiocchi it was identical so I guess you just have to decide how to slice the per shell cost. I justified it by $$$ per FPS.

Plus, I felt better knowing that a portion of the proceeds from my purchase went to the Pheasants Forever foundation.

Interesting, I see you put a value on Feet per second when choosing a load. I am not to concerned about FPS, what I look for is pellet count. Personally having more pellets to put on target is more important than FPS. For example 1 1/4 OZ of #4 equals 135 pellets, the typical pay load for a 2 3/4 12 ga shell. I shoot Golden Pheasant #5 1 3/4 oz that equals 297 pellets going 1200 fps. With this load I can put more than double the pellet count on a bird then the #4's

Why Not Get both?

Kent Fast Lead - 2 3/4 - 1 5/8 oz. - #5 - 1485 fps!

$13.50 / box.

(Note) This is an extremely hot load for 2 3/4. I would not advise this load in older guns. Shells will never compensate for aim, but I harvested 47 roosters last year with just 2 lost birds!

47 roosters WOW I wish I had that much time to hunt. ...I am lucky to get out 5 times in a season.

I was luck enough to spend 9 days hunting in South Dakota before the CO season got underway. I sent many birds home with family and friends. By the end of the hunt, everyone converted to Kent Fast lead.

Do you mean 1 3/8 ounce or 1 5/8 ounce? Thanks

I have hunted with kent and I really liked them. If I can't get Fiocchi's I use kent's....
