Controlled Shooting Area?

What is a controlled shooting area? I have always come across them, but never thought too much about it. The signs say "Controlled Shooting Area...No Trespassing".

I noticed when I bought my 2011 license that the state has a permit for controlled shooting areas.

I've seen them on 'pay as you go places'. They release the birds, you come in and shoot them. Allows them to shoot both tame and wild birds a couple months before and after the season.

Controlled shooting areas are what you typically hunt on if you're hunting a game preserve, etc. There are two important characteristics. As Chessy stated, hunting seasons are extended on controlled shooting areas. Secondly, as you stated, you can buy a permit to hunt on controlled shooting areas only. I don't believe you have to have hunter's safety to hunt on controlled shooting areas with a valid permit, and the permit is cheaper than a standard hunting license.

I'd been curious about this as well... More or less because i know of one that holds a good deal of birds.

So your telling me i can just by that controlled shooting area permit and go hunt on any one of them I want?? Sounds a little to easy to me.

That's not what I meant, apologies for the confusion. What I meant is that these controlled shooting areas are lands owned by outfitters. You can hunt controlled shooting areas with a controlled shooting area permit in lieu of a regular hunting license, but the land is owned and operated by the outfitter (i.e. it's private property).

The biggest benefits to having land registered as "controlled shooting areas" is listed in my post above. Outfitters can have hunters out before, during, and after the regular season for upland hunting (Sept 1 to March 31 I believe). Also, folks without hunter's safety can come and hunt these lands with a controlled shooting area permit.

Spence, you don't have to have a KS hunting license to hunt controlled shooting areas if you have the permit. On the other hand, you don't need the permit if you have a KS license. Either way you have to have permission (read $ paid) from the owner to hunt any of these areas. You are also allowed to shoot hens on these areas and the guys who run the areas usually put a mix of hens and roosters out. Sometimes if you ask (and maybe pay extra) they'll give you all roosters.

Ok all makes sense now.... I knew that seemed a little easy. I started kicking myself for not looking into that earlier. Tried finding out who owned this land that I'm talking about but never got it figured out
