Coming to Kansas this Fall

Greetings,

I have been a periodic lurker here, but thought I'd officially say hello. I've got a 10 year old shorthair and a 35 year old cousin that I'll be bringing with me to freelance hunt in Kansas this fall. We are really looking forward to it!

I have enjoyed reading the posts, hearing reports, and especially seeing the pictures y'all have posted.

Thanks Toad!

Brittboy we are coming from Alabama not sure yet exactly when or where. I intend to focus in general north of I-70 in the general vicinity of Hays, but that could change as we are flexible.

I am curious what most folks would recommend for timing. Between thanksgiving and Dec 8th will be out due to family and work commitments but otherwise we are flexible.

Also I'm wondering about other recreational opportunities, as we will only have 1 dog and will have to pace ourselves on the pheasants and quail. Small game and waterfowl maybe?

I would come before 2 December if at all possible considering the dates you have given. Bring your fishing poles, can be some great crappie fishing that time of year.

Any ponds you encounter should hold waterfowl if they are not frozen. Not an over abundance of ponds when you get that far West though... I think the lakes and refuges are listed on the WIHA maps if you are into setting up for them instead of jumping ponds.

I can't speak or the Hays area, but 2015 has been the year of the cottontail in my neck of the woods. We're practically tripping over them around home. I'm sure that would be another option for you.

If you like to shoot prairie dogs, you can often get easy permission for that too.

Waterfowl (and pheasant) hunting at Cheyenne Bottoms and/or Quivera USFWS refuge is always in the mix when I travel to KS. I've had good success wading in and pass shooting. Both places are beautiful - nothing like a sunrise or sunset on the open plains over a large wetlands. Enjoy your trip.

Lots of jayhawks in Kansas, but they will leave a bad taste in your mouth. :)
