Chasing issue.

So I’ve been working on my pups chasing issues. She will find the bird. Point it. Hold point. I can look for it. She’ll stay on point. As soon as that bird pops up and flies off, she’ll chase it down. I’ve tried every method and nothing is working. At home she’s perfect. She won’t chase. In the field all training is gone out the window with the chasing. I’ve spent days working with her in the field just going back to basics. And still the same. I put a check cord on her. Let her run with it. Or I’ll snap it on when she finds the bird. Then praise her. I’ll have a friend “find” the bird and when it pops up I’ll say whoa and then hold her back. Friend fires. I make my pup wait. Then I’ll send her to retrieve it. I know it’s something I’m doing. As she’s been doing really good with her training. Any advice would be awesome.

I have the same issue with my 9 month old lab, and other dogs of mine did it, too…they finally gave up. You have a pointer, I don’t mean to imply it’s apples to apples…I’m sure you’ll get good feedback here…the dog will likely learn to give up…

I’m hoping. It took my other shorthair a few yrs to stop chasing. If it wasn’t for hunt tests and helping with some guides I wouldn’t care. But I don’t want her to get shot by the kids.

Run that same drill but flush the bird with no gunshot a few times, see if the gun makes her brake or the bird taking flight. I let my dogs break on flush and it doesn’t take long for them to recognize a missed bird. Maybe she’s just not ready to be in front of a bunch of kids, it’s dangerous! We almost had a dog shot on a wounded pheasant going for a retrieve in open ground when the kids started shooing. It was so close!

And remember you are using the word pup to describe your dog, steady to wing, flush and shot consistently is the definition of a finished pointing dog!

She just turned a yr old. Shes rock solid when she is on point. I can leave her on point walk to the truck come back and she’ll still be on point. You can touch her do whatever you want and she won’t move an inch. Today. I was working without my 12ga. Bird would shoot up outta the launcher. She’d want to chase. I staked her out. So she couldn’t chase. When she didn’t move. I praised her. Then unhooked so she could find the next. The 6th time with the launcher. The bird flew up. She just stood there. Quail came right back down. And she still stood there. Quail is now on crack and is running around. She hasn’t moved. Quail decided it was done and shot up and flew. As soon as it flew she took off. My stake is somewhere. Not sure where as I apparently didn’t put it deep enough. lol. The issue was as soon as the bird would fly off she’d chase.
