Hey everyone,

I took my 15 month old vizsla hunting for the first time today and it was very cold and windy, his nose area is very chapped and red and he keeps licking it. Can you please offer me advice on what we can put on his lips to help relieve this? I know that vaseline is not good for dogs to ingest so we cannot use this. Any advice you could give me would be appreciated.

I'll post some pictures later of the day. Great time and we both had a blast.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Nick

Thank you,
Nick and Chance

That or I use just chapstick on my finger and put it where needed!!!! My shorthair is chapped bad and usually bleeding a bit, but they heal up quick!!:cheers:

2nd that about the chapstick, My shorthair has the same thing happen but after applying some, he heals rather quick! Good Luck

Thanks everyone. I will try it out and see what happens.

Does this happen often? I take it that it's pretty common when it's col and windy out?

Thanks again,

Nick

Mostly from the dogs having their nose to the ground!!! It is worse in heavy cover!!!!

no matter what you apply to the nose or under belly, the dog will most likely lick it off......he will be fine, my vizsla gets a red nose all the time, mainly from abrasion from the cover he is in....

Cut open a Vitamin E capsule (pure) and apply oil to nose if it persists. This has worked for our female that gets an extremely dry nose from time to time.

If it's the first time hunting the dog then this will probably be the owrst he will ever be. They get tougher the more you go and won't show as much abrasion as the first time.

Now if anyone has any reccomendations for my Vizsla's nose I'd appreciate it! He got bit on the snout by a coyote on Saturday. Some real nice fang marks and bruising too.

Coyote and his friend didn't make it 20 yards out of the grass.

Nice Huh, we should not shoot the poor coyotes though:D
Yea right. Hope you got the rabies and stuff up to date. An antibiotic should be good.

My good buddy has a Visla and it gets red nosed and raw as well. He puts bag balm on it and it heals right up. Doesn't seem to really bother the critter.
