Change of plans

Our NW Iowa snow has receded a lot now. I have not been out into the cover. Some of it, like the reeds canary grass is likely flat and done for the season. Switch grass could be standing back up now, will get a peek tomorrow. Guessing you are on the road now. If coming back and you find yourself near NW IA without your 3 IA roosters for the day, reach-out.

We should be good for now, still another week of good weather is predicted here. One issue is that most of the waterways and smaller parcels will not have much standing cover remaining. That reed canary grass flatens-out and doesnt stand back-up like switchgrass. Any public usually has better native grasses.
Got 3 Saturday morning, saw a pile and the food plots are doing their thing.

Just back from our Central K.S. trip. My grandson, who will be referred to as young blood, and I arrived on the 19th. 20th was cloudy, windy and cool. Grasses were better than usual. Saw around 8 roosters and 2 coveys 1st day. Shot 4 roosters. I've hunted quail my whole life but never have l seen faster, smarter quail. They were almost impossible in that wind. Both of us struggled some shooting at the roosters. I was lucky enough to drop both my 1st shot misses with the 2nd shot, young blood should have limited. Missed 2 and muffed a chance to double. In his defense, he was shooting his turkey gun, Mossberg 500, that he doesn't shoot often. He won't bring his Browning silver; afraid he'll scratch it! 2nd day, similar weather, except sun came out in the afternoon. Saw some less in a different area but still scratched down 3. That afternoon figured out they were in the cut Milo. Big milo fields were tough for 2 guys and 1 dog, but surprisingly, was able to kill a couple over points. 3rd day hunted milo and pretty heavy grass waterways. Saw a hen a rooster in the grass but again scratched down another three in the milo. Weather heated up in the afternoon. My self and young blood both were exhausted and hadn't seen a bird since it reached 60 degrees. Quite around 1:30. 4th day I decided to see if they were even using the grass draws. We were up early and hit some nice waterways a little after daylight and never saw a bird. I did though, heard wings and looked up to see about 5 -7 pheasants? get up 200- 250 yards out in the middle of a wheat stubble field. Walked a big milo field back to the truck. Only saw a few birds but I was able to kill one. Young blood had some misses, lost a cripple and thanks to the dogs, recovered two more cripples. But still beat me by one bird. I surprised myself by walking 8.4, 7.7,5.27 and 7.13 so, I'm not out of the game yet.:) Even walked young bloods butt off. All in all, it was the best trip in years. I'm going to try and sneak another trip in either back to K.S. or maybe Iowa it the weather holds out.
