Chances for success for 2 hunters?

I might be deploying overseas in May which means I will miss next hunting season completely and I want to take a neat hunting trip with my son (11) before I go. The last two years we did AR duck hunting but we are thinking of heading to KS, Hill City/Phillipsburg/Hays areas from December 27- 1 January with my GSP and english setter. What are the chances of us getting into birds? I have got the WIHA maps, have found several hotels in the areas, and am pounding the internet for tips.

It seems like big party hunts are the more successful but I would hope a two person team could get some action. We are used to hunting grouse and woodcock with about 12 flushes in a 4 hour hunt. Both of my dogs are very solid and have hunted pheasant before but only on hunting preserves. They are very good on grouse and woodcock. My gsp is a tracking machine which I think would be needed to hunt the wide open country of KS.

Casjoker,

You will do fine. We made our first trip out last year. 2 first time Phez hunters, 1-4 yr old setter, 1-11 month old setter and 1- 9 month old brit. Inexperienced to say the least. We found birds, killed birds and had a blast. Good luck and enjoy. You are at the right place for the best tips on the web.

You will do fine.... Walk the corners and the draws... There is a lot of WIHA in that area of KS..... That is the best part of hunting in smaller groups is enjoying the hunt.... Not really much fun master-blasting your limit

Thanks for the info guys. I do not enjoy having large groups and have always prefered 3 or 4 people max.

I am excited to see my boy get his first wild pheasant! Sounds like there are some quail in those areas too.

You and your boy will get a few opportunities. Continue to hunt until sundown and be near a roosting spot for the last couple hours of the day.....

Best of luck to you gents!

Just got back from SW Kansas. Just my Son and I for the first 1 1/2 days and 3 dogs, not all at the same time and done just fine. We found if you hunt early am and close to feed you will see more and the same with the eve. hunt. Birds seem to set better at those times. Hope you have a great hunt, anytime in the field is great. Good luck!

I hope two guys can have some success I'm going with 2 this year and that's one more than usual, I do wish I had more dog power as my little Springer gets pretty beat up after 4 days of all day hunting.

My setter is 10 this year so she will be good for only short hunts. My gsp is seven and should be able to pound hard. I am more worried about the 15 extra pounds I am carrying.

Dad, brother in law, and myself hunted the second weekend, just the three of us and two shorthairs. We had a limit on Saturday by 1, and a limit on Sunday by noon. Granted, we were hunting mostly private ground that hadn't been pounded all week.

I've gone out by myself in December and January with one dog, just wandered the big CRP WIHA's and done alright, more than once I would have had a limit if I could have improved my shooting. Like was said, hit the draws, weedy corners, and field edges around stubble and you'll do alright.

Thanks for your service
