Champ training day

AWESOME! Love the video, showing the ability to work ground scent , then switch to where he earns his keep, air scent, very nice!

Today was the day to introduce Champ to water. He liked the water and did some swimming in the deeper parts of the creek. I definitely need to work on his recall when we are in the field. He likes to follow his nose and ignore the come command lately. More yard work looks promising this week!

Holy cow is he growing!!! You're right about the basic yard work, it's for his own safety.

I put a couple of quail out on the edges of the field today and took the dogs for a romp. It was in the low 40's and I thought I better take advantage of the low temps while they are here. Blitz had most of the finds but all dogs did well. Champ is listening better, ranging out more and more confident. Here are a few pictures.

Enjoy the weekend and happy Memorial Day!

Thanks for sharing. I hope you and your family do the same..be sure to save a piece of burger for your four legged members of the family if you have a barbecue!

I had Champ out this morning for a little work on quail by himself. I planted one bird and while he was on point I grabbed another quail from my bag and gave it a toss. He watched the tossed bird fly but he didn't break point.

I then flushed the planted bird and fired a blank as it flew off. Champ held pretty well until the shot was fired. After a little more running, he found the flushed bird again on the edge of the woods.

I've just been running the dogs on the mowed paths and edge of the adjoining fields. I've also been staying out of the woods with them. Hopefully in a few weeks that can change.

I think if the season opened today Champ would give a good account of himself!

I think this version is more clear.

I will run Champ in the NA test in NAVHDA in late September. I'll need to see when some AKC hunt tests are scheduled. I didn't see something in the area the last time I checked.

I wanted to see how Champ would do if he was presented with a water retrieve. I planted a chukar next to a pond and planned to shoot it over the water to see how things went. Everything worked out and Champ had his first water retrieve of a bird. I was happy about his performance. There was a lot of cover around the pond and I had a tough time getting pictures of him in the water.

It hasn't been a bad summer for training and things are going well. I'm not sure when I'll get more bird work in but hopefully I don't have to wait too long.
