Just got back from a 3 day hunt in Chamberlain with my son. We hunted with Priebe Pheasant Hunting. Bob Priebe, his wife Isabelle, and their son Todd are great people. Bob and Todd put us on plenty of birds. I just wish my shooting was better! My son did great the first day but his shooting fell off after that. The second and third day we hunted with 4 other guys who were not doing much better than we were at hitting them but we all had fun teasing each other. My son got 5 the first day, 0 for me. I could not hit anything! The second day the group of all six of us got 14 and wounded several we could not find. The third day the group got 16 and wounded several more that we could not find. Wind was blowing about 30-35 mph the third day. All together a GREAT trip and plenty of birds. I hope everyone who has gone to SD has had a good time and those that are going have a good one too!:cheers:

They can be hard to hit! That's one of the reasons I shoot Trap and Skeet all summer. It's great when they fold and fall DRT (Dead Right There).

I shoot Trap and Sporting Clays pretty much year round and while I'm not the greatest shot I get my fair share of those little clay birds. I just can't understand why I have so much trouble hitting pheasants! I goose hunt and I can hit them most of the time. It is very frustrating not being able to hit pheasants with any regularity!
Clay targets are slowing down soon after they are released from the trap, wild Pheasants do just the opposite. A rooster with a tail wind is one of the hardest upland targets to kill.
The human eye tends to focus on the middle of any target. The long tail feathers on roosters tend to catch your attention, so we tend not to lead the bird enough. Concentrate on the white ring on the neck for a focal point and you should get better results.

confidence is the key. Once missing gets in your head it is hard to remove. Much different hitting a duck or a goose you know is coming. I have hunted pheasants since i was 11 and they still startle the crap out of me, especially with a flusher.
My problem is that I am a lifelong grouse hunter and I tend to pound the birds as soon as they get up. I have backed off on shot size and have considered using lighter loads to prevent sluicing the poor buggers.
I'd wait longer for them to get going at a range but I seem to miss them once they get a full head of steam up.

I hunted with the Priebe's last year and they are great people and took good care of us. Hunting felt like a preserve, our party of 10 harvested 90 roosters in 3 days and only saw a handful of hens during the 3 days. Roosters were spaced evenly in groups of 2. If you want a good shoot then this is the place for you, if you want a good hunt then go elsewhere. We hunted public land this year it was much more difficult but far more rewarding.
We saw hens every day,more the last day than the first two. Yes,it is a preserve type operation, but not your typical preserve, in my opinion. In any case,it sure beats the hell out of anything we have here in Maryland! If I had a good bird dog and more time to hunt I would try hunting public land, but since I don't my options are limited.
