Camping questions

Hi all, new to the forum as well as Kansas hunting. I have hunted South Dakota the past ten years and decided this year i would like to try some quail before my little britt gets to old to make the trip. My question is how much grief would a guy get sleeping in the back of the truck while parked on state land? I am heading down Monday and am hunting alone, not being sure what area i want to hunt or will have success i want to be able to stay mobile and have the ability to bounce around without worrying about making a hotel reservation some place.

Technically its illegal to "camp" on the state public hunting land and WIHA. But just about anywhere you go there are state fishing lakes and reservoirs to camp at.

I have done it on dead end roads in the middle of nowhere. I dont see a thing wrong with it. Biggest muley buck to date was walking out from quietly truck camping.

have spent many a night sleeping in the car in an interstate rest area.

That's where I went when I used to hunt from a pull behind trailer.

You can go to this KDWP page: http://ksoutdoors.com/Hunting/Where-to-Hunt, pick your area and click on it to bring up the available public land. From there you'll get a map showing public areas. Pick one of those and it will bring up general info on that area. Off to the right side of that there will be a button for more information. Click that and you can usually download a PDF map of the public area which will show camping areas with a little teepee like symbol. (Look for one with a toilet of some kind; tends to make camping a bit easier IMO!)

Good luck and enjoy your hunt!

Thanks for the help guys, hunting this way alone definitely helps cut the price of the trip down, in turn keeps the wife a little happier.

Done it more than once. Used 2 hunt with 2 of my best buds and stay in cheap motels , we would flip coins and the odd man out was the winner and got his own bed. The other 2 could bunk up in a double bed or flip again and loser got the floor and maybe a dog or two to bunk with Lol.

Well if you haven't already headed out, I just slept on the side of dirt roads/highway pull offs in the truck while out in KS this year, no one every bothered me. From reading around on the regs I gathered that state land is supposed to be posted for the purpose of camping, I definitely saw some areas at WMAs and such posted no camping and some specifically designated areas. Anyway, this site has some info, https://freecampsites.net/, and many of those little city parks I found to have water spigots to refill the drinking water jugs and some electrical plug ins so I wouldn't have to use my truck battery so much for charging collars and the like. Hope it goes well.

Just got back to wisconsin after seven days in kansas, i had no problems finding places to stay. Not hunting in kansas before i ended up doing some traveling around the smokey hills region looking for quail but state camp grounds are dispersed nicely and make for a good place to stay. I only got to see three coveys the biggest being about a dozen but i only hunted public land so i'm thinking next year maybe i should go a little earlier in the year? There were hulls on the ground just about every walk in i hunted so it lead me to believe that the hunting was good there at some point in the year.

That's what i was told as well, i did get the opportunity to meet some really nice people that were more than willing to give out tips to increase my odds and its things like that that warrants a return trip for me next year. I hunted ducks in Arkansas last year and people were rude and made a guy feel unwelcome i'm guessing they don't like out of state hunters and for me there methods were successful because i'll never return. Thanks for the hospitality Kansas id be happy to return the favor with some Wisconsin duck hunting or some South Dakota roosters if we ever meet up.
