Went out through Byron Walker area today with a friend.
WOW did I forget just how hard bird hunting is without a damn dog; must have walked 10 damn miles of fields.
We actually popped a 20-30 covey within 10 minutes of one decent spot but they flew toward the damn highway so no shots were taken on flush. We did try to walk them down but no luck on that one. It was about an hour later that I started cussing my brother for taking his dog to Indiana
We kept moving east hunting the south side of the highway but not a bird to be seen.
We went back up to far west side of Byron area to hunt the north side and started hunting back in the heavily wooded area because we saw several sets running into the fields. Again, no other covey's were found but two single birds jumped a bit out of range. So, quail are there but without a dog it's the devils own work walking them down.
We finished up in a field I know in that area that used to have some turkeys and lo and behold we ran into a set of about 30 feeding in that field. We decided to softly flush them up to see what tree row they went to.
Now, a trip to wally world for a turkey stamp and back out tomorrow.
But damn what I wouldn't give for a decent brit right now.
My old ass is tired.
