Boot Leather , Brush and Brittany’s End of the Season

Boot leather

Had a good wrap up to the season but hit it hard for two days straight sun up to sun down . A little over 29,000 steps on Friday and 14 ,000 plus on Saturday . Saturday we had two trucks and very little dead heading .

Brush and the Cover .

We found birds in and on the edge of dense grass and weeds . There has been much CRP come out and going back into ag production . While I am a big fan of CRP I hope that there are naive grass waterways in these crop fields .

Brittany’s

My youngest dog Ginger has been one of my best bird producers and bird dog buddy’s out of over 30 years of Brittany’s she continued the same on this trip .

My older dog Lilo who has pretty much worked as supporting cast to ginger had some great bird work on wounded birds She helped me with my limit bird each day of the hunt . Finding bird I knocked down after search for 20 minutes or so and then are way back to the truck casting back through the area 25 minutes later and a little further down wind she pointed the wounded bird and retrieved him to hand .

The last bird of the hunt came with all an Audience, I had took a less likely drainage in a pasture and had seen very few track in the snow , but toward the end of my walk was coming to some cattails that boosted my outlook.

Shortly after Lilo casted near the cattails out came a rooster a little on the long side . My 20 gauge with an ounce charge of # 5 sent the Rooster Tumbling and looked like a good hit .

She and I hustled to where he went down I was looking for track in the snow where he lit and was calling her back to the fall site with no avail . She was tracking the wounded bird that was very much alive. She brought him back to the truck where our crew was at and released him to hand .

A proud moment for me ,I wasn’t sure if she was ever going to make a bird dog but , She has earned her spot on the starting team and, and a cheeseburger at the end of the hunt .

A limit of Late season Kansas Roosters 2 days in a row , many thanks to our host and their Generosity.

This is a picture taken By my hunting buddy to as we were walking back with the last bird of the day .

Great write up! I saw a lot of clearing on my midweek trip- it was all I could think about on my long ride home. The face of rural Kansas has changed so much since the first time I walked it with a shotgun and a bird dog in the early nineties.
i was very pleased with the outcome of my last hoor-rah- the snow made it “easy” to predict where the birds were holding.

When I got back home to Topeka, I about had to re-learn to drive , I really enjoy easing down the back roads of rural /western part of the state where the pace of life is not quite so hectic

How did everybody’s else’s season end up ?

I agree with your thoughts on Western Kansas. My wife grew up there and would never go back, but if it was up to me I'd love to live out there. My season was probably the worst I've had in 25 years of pheasant hunting. Made it out West 3 times, first 2 trips weren't very good, however this last weekend was the best I've had all season. Probably hunted twenty days and we (3 buddies and I) struggled to get into birds most hunts. Quail seemed ok, but pheasants were really spotty. My shooting wasn't very good this season. Had a hard time finding the shells I like to shoot so ended up shooting different loads and wasn't happy with them. Even in rough years, it's always sad to see it end. Today was the most depressing day of the year. Hope for a good hatch and better shooting next year!

I agree with the how spotty the pheasants were , I was happy I bought a flat of some of my favorite shells 2 years
Back , things were slim pickings for lead pheasant loads this year .
