Bird dog foreleg protection

During a recent pheasant hunt in South Dakota, my dog got snagged on some barbed wire and it tore a pretty good flap of skin in the crook of his elbow. Necessitated sutures. For next season, I’ve been looking for something that would protect his forelegs along with a skid plate for his undercarriage. I can’t find anything for the forelegs. Is anyone aware of such a thing?

I've had my dogs get cut in that area several times. I've never found anything to protect it. Sylmar use to make a front body suit that may have worked but it's not available anymore.

Kids long sleeve t-shirt then a skid plate over. Inspect often and keep clean. Never perfect.
That t-shirt isn't going to protect against barbed wire or other sharp objects.

The other problem if your dog is cut in that area is to keep them from licking or chewing at the wound/stitches. When my Brittany got cut there a few years ago I bought a recovery sleeve from Chewy.com that worked really well. Here's a link to it:

K-9 Topcoat has/had a vest with a couple inches of front sleeve. and chest plate. they've changed the material at least 3 times. my last setter could shred one per season, but i figured that was saving some stitches at the vet. i see that a company named Tyro has a very similar vest with a padded armpit flap, and they are on the Quail fest vendor list.

These might be simple/stupid questions but how old is your dog and how often has he or she been exposed to barb wire? I live in Michigan and hunt primarily grouse and woodwork with no fences. When a pup goes to pheasant country there is some education about learning how to cross/handle fences. More exposure the better they get with crossing/going thru. I run chest protectors as I'm really more concerned with cuts on the chest. Only have had one front leg cut during a western hunting trip in my 40 years hunting western states and that was from metal other than a fence.

My guess is you would need to get custom made sleeves either stand alone or attached to a chest protector.

Tough area to protect, some protection better than none. Your pants are better than shorts. We do our best to avoid barb wire.
I carry a staple gun, but try to avoid using one.

In live in northern Ohio. That was my first South Dakota hunt, and first hunt out west. My Brittany is six. He’s never had to deal with barbed wire before. No fences where I usually hunt him.

I’m considering learning how to run a sewing machine and make something from buckskin out codura.

I don't think it's a stupid question. A lot of dogs can figure out pretty quick what hurts and should be avoided moving forward. My dog did. Since that episode many years ago, she is way more cautious around fences.

My gsp had a HELL of a bad year last year as a 1 year old. Stitches/staples throughout the season. Just one screw up this year and it was something i stapled and we hunted after. I searched the web up and down for what youre talking about and found nothing. Lion Country supply is where I get my vest. Most chest coverage ive found. Ive watched her square up barbed wire hard, and the vest took it. She destroyed one in a season and a half, so I bought another.
My dog still goes like a bat out of hell and often goes over fences instead of under. I hold my breath every time. Just who she is i guess. We will fix stuff as it comes up.
