Best pheasant/quail hunting lodge for value...

My brother and I are looking to take my dad to Kansas to do some pheasant and quail hunting. We are planning to do the trip around December 2017. I know it might be a little early but I was hoping you could help us find a quality lodge for a quick trip. Unfortunately there isn't a TripAdvisor for pheasant lodges, or at least I did not find one. (If there is by some chance let me know) Looking for a Friday, Saturday, and Sunday kind of thing.

We are from South Texas along the coast and do plenty of duck and dove hunting, with some quail mixed in when our friend lets us hunt at their place. So we arent necessarily rookies. Really just saying that we don't really want or need some big tourist hunting spot that babies you. Just want the real genuine Kansas pheasant and quail hunt.

I would say the budget for us is about $1500 per person for the weekend with hunting, lodging, and food. We would prefer a little less but understand we do want a good quality experience so if there is one that might be a little more expensive you think is truly worth it then feel free to share it with me.

Our dad always tends to do trips all the way in our family, if you know what I mean, so a place with great hunting, boutique lodging, and excellent dining would be ideal. If my budget is unrealistic for that please let me know that too. I'm definitely a rookie at the Kansas scene.

Thanks so much!

Happy Hunting

Thanks browndog. That is the kind of place I'm looking for. The only thing I might like to be a little nicer would be the accomodations. But those are definitely the types of places I'm hoping to find the best of in Kansas. Maybe some hidden gems. Also, to anyone, is there a best time of year to try to book these? When you could possibly find a better deal? Or is that just wishful thinking?

Thanks

One popped up on me the other day
I think it was upland Inn in greensburg. Looked pretty nice.

I hate to push commercial hunting but I've met Jason (the owner) numerous times - he's a nice guy - he also is the one who owns/sells the surrogator and I've driven by some of his property and he is a dog guy. I dont think his birds are all going to be 100% wild (ie he supplements with the surrogator) but I'd think you will have a far better hunt at his place than the put/take places. You'd probably have a better experience than staying in a stuffy lodge as well hunting dumb pen birds but thats my .02.

He was a member of the Wichita Quail Forever group for a while and is pretty big on habitat.

I'll pm you another one Id really love to spend the money on going but dont think any of my friends would do it and I cant afford or justify spending the min amount as you need to come up with money for 3 folks...anyways if you'd need an extra person count me in on that one.

The first question for you is wild birds or released? There are many, many places in Kansas that can offer an all-in experience for released birds. Not so much for those that offer wild-birds only.

Mentioned above was Ringneck Ranch. That's about the best experience for released birds I've had. Lodging is good, comfortable, clean, but certainly not "posh". The food wonderful, but basic. We're talking traditional meat-and-potatoes stuff, good tasting and lots of it, but definitely not fancy. It's in a dry county, so you have to bring your own booze. I entertain clients there every February and have done so for 10+ years. It will probably be a little over your budget, especially with tip. They offer a wild birds option, but I've never done it and I think they want bigger groups than three.

I've heard of Upland Inn, but can't comment on their operation. Same for 10 Gauge Outfitters. They're pretty close to one another.

Thanks for that too. Also if yall know of any that are just once in a lifetime types of places that are around $2,000 I wouldnt mind looking into those either.

Based on what I've been reading on this forum this season, the SW, say the Greensburg or Dodge areas, is probably better this year than NW - and a little closer for you. Have a great hunt and a good time.

By the looks of dismissing some of the suggestions I'm guessing this is where he wants to go.

If you want fancy you're probably better off going to another state - some good suggestions have been presented have been good especially upland inn if you do not want to hunt the equivalent of barnyard chickens. This honestly is probably the wrong forum to ask this question - I doubt hardly a soul who frequents the KS board has visited a bird hunting lodge with any frequency. The texas leasing forum or something similar will probably get you better feedback.

You might look into Scattered Acres in Palmer KS. Super nice folks run it and located in the very beautiful Flint Hills. Manhattan is not very far away if you need a place to kill a little more time.

You're saying the lunch of home processed summer sausage and luke warm coffee we drink on the side of the road between hunting public access fields is not high end accommodations?
