bells on dogs

I hunt with two Griffons that on occasion I will activate their beepers when in tall grass or sloughs when I can't see them. I have two hunting buddies that have bells on their dogs that are jingling the entire time they are on the move. We have had heated discussions on what is right and what is wrong. I would like some feed back mainly on the bells. GOOD THING OR BAD THING IN THE FIELD. I have noticed that the birds hear the bells coming sooner than we want.
Thanks,

I believe that pheasants can hear and recognize bells and danger after a while. Hell, they know the sound of a car door slamming, why not a bell! lol! I use a bell on Ruby all the time during deer season, as well as an orange coat. Once deer season is over I take it off, but then again, she's a flushing dog not a pointer, so she's always within sight. I'll also put it on her if I take someone out who is not used to hunting over a dog - just so that they know where she is at all times.
