Bad shells?

My son and I both had a semi-bad experience with Black Cloud steel shot.
After firing the first round my 870 and his Browning would not extract and eject the spent casing. After forcing the shell out I could tell the brass was deformed. I was unable to reinsert it in the chamber due to the distortion. Just wondered if anyone else had a similar experience with this or other brands. The shells were not corroded, etc when we loaded them. It sure does cause some anxiety when you are suddenly shooting a single shot.

I may have used a confusing description in my thread. When I wrote "loaded" I meant loaded into the gun, not loading as in reloaded. I realize now this may not have been clear. These were shells from the manufacturer and used right out of the box, not loaded by me. Sorry, thanks for any responses.
 
You explained it well. I was stating that I had experienced the same problem with Fed shells. It just happens that I loaded mine myself, but they were new hulls from Fed. Before being loaded they would not slide completely into the chamber, something I never think to check with new hulls.

don't believe in my years of hunting i have ever had a defective shell, one that would not load, have had a very rare primer that didn't go off and one super x years ago that had no powder in it or at least the powder did not ignite. as i roll my own, i am pretty careless on the condition of my hulls, like i reload some of them too many times and once in a while the brass will split and i may not catch it till it won't go in the gun but even that is pretty rare

Kent 12 ga. turkey loads (yes, we use turkey loads on pheasant) would stick in my single shot, but they worked pretty well with my dad's pump. But then again my single shot was a $117 gun from Walmart, so that could have been the problem.
 
SAS call federal. Had a couple prairie storms act up like that. They will want the lot numbers off your box. They took great care of me when I called. I kept my temper with the gal and she had an engineer type fellow call me and get details. He said he wanted to know what environment the shells were introduced to so they could improve their end. They sent several replacement for my troubles. Truely were compassionate.
 
Been shooting federal for 30 years plus. I go through about 10 cases a year, never ever have I had a misfire, dud, or stuck case. I do not use black cloud, prairie storm or other designer shells of any kind. No rem heavi shot, super duper rain stormers. Just standard loads. The rest is a money grab and over rated. I shoot 5 cases a year of fed premiums and game loads. 0 issues ever, not one. The only time I have had a gun fail, it was dirty. Not the shell.:thumbsup:
 
Well fsc Springer I have to shoot what the sponsor gives me whether it's a prairie storm or gold medal or a premium. They deliver 250 cases of gold medals every January. My rep made me try the designer shells as you call them. Great shells for the price. Free.
 
Can't beat free LOL:thumbsup: If you want to dispose of them I will take free ammo any day, designer or not.:D What do you do if you don't mind, that federal would do such a thing? Not trying to stir up something that's not here, just was saying I have had great luck with federal ammo. I just don't buy the "designer" loads so to speak is all. They to me are just not cost prohibitive for training and every day use. Too spendy:eek:, so to speak. And the few times I have used them, no dif from premiums, but no failures either.:thumbsup:
 
Shoot trap everyday. Put a kid's shoot on once a year where we use between 50 & 75 cases. The kids shoot 25 practice and 25 for a score. Last year we gave away 2 870s and twenty cases of shells. My late sisters trust buys all the targets and guns and we provide all the shells. Patterned it off a guy in sek who pays for everything out of his pocket. Shell allowance will determine whether we can have another shoot . Insurance went up over double. May just throw all resources to the Kansas shoot.
