I couldn't agree more. I can't count the times I've said that this "thing" tries to do too much. I just want a distance, direction (or bearing), and whether or not the dog is moving. You right, it's frustrating to push or hit the wrong button only to have to get back to where you were.
Regarding staring at it, I'm at the age where I have a great amount of trouble seeing up close. After about 10', I can see like I was 20. Because of this it doesn't do any good to keep checking the Astro. All I see is a blur. I see my dogs what I'd say is "frequently" and if I don't see them for while, I stop, put the glasses on, and see where they are. Wouldn't it be nice to see a bare-bones version of the receiver?!!
For me the Astro is gives piece of mind and keeps serenity in the hunt.
