Back Hunting....your opinion...

I know AKC don't allow it. Think NAVDA also? I forget.

Personally, I like back hunting. I've seen too many pheasants taking hunters for fools. Following 50 yards back. Plain as day. All day long. 3 or 4 of them together. Keeping pace with the hunters. Enjoying the entertainment.
Now my Sweetheart seemed to know this. I could tell right off when she was heading back. She'd go out far to one side. Make a big big circle around back. Come up behind them. They would usually flush. And fly away from me. But she wouldn't let them get away with that follow the dummy game.
I like back hunting. What's your opinion?

#1 Rule follow and trust the dog !!! Where ever they go I go !!!

I broke this rule once last year , my dog wouldn't hunt along side me she hunted closer to another hunter in our party , well she was tracking birds in a huge CRP field , where did the birds come up by my dog .

I like my dog to stay to the front but I trust her enough to know if she is going behind me a bird might have slipped back behind us . Refer to rule 1

+1... :) It's actually funny we talk about those sneaky birds making us look silly... I can tell you the few times I haven't trusted my dog that I looked even sillier.

If I'm hunting downwind and my dog goes around behind me, I'll play. If we're hunting upwind and she goes behind, I handle her to the front.
