I know this is a little off topic... but anyone chased quail in Arizona yet this season?

Looking for some field reports in terms of numbersof birds.... Looks like they have had a couple of wet springs now.

I'm not sure but Jmac was giving some encouraging reports on the bird numbers down there.

quail hound check out my albums.
Yes the quail numbers are awsome the gambles anyway. Will be going to hunt cotton tops next weekend. will give a ropert when done.

4 hunters 42 gambles no dogs 3.5 hours. opening day 2010. No dogs because cholla and other cacti, and every other plant in the state is not worth the vet bill. Gambels run or fly, they will not hold for a dog/ dogs. I ran into a few guys that had dogs and, had limited results. One or two quail. One guy had a snake bite dog, a springer.

Opening day the four of us killed 6 rattle snake's in that 3.5 hours. another forum that I am a member of Arizona only, the census is the snake's are extremely numerous this year.

Ill bet I saw 700 Quail opening day. Alot of them where juvies, about half. :)

rsm,

The quick anwer is the tucson area. However, In january the northern parts of the state will be snow, Mogollon rim and mountains around Tucson. Lower elevation of the state of Arizona, all get about the same amount of rain fall a year give or take an inch or two. We get between 8 and 12 inches on average. Not sure why you asked this, but hope it helps you.:)

Maybe I didn't phrase my question right.... Over the last year where were the rain hotspots?

From my experience and I think others, if you find the areas that recieved more spring rain you find the areas with more quail - beter reproduction.....

Maybe I am wrong.

I think in most states you are on the right track. In arizona you must find the standing water areas. Rain Comes in buckets down here, very infrequently, and disappears quickly into the ground.

What you are really asking is wear to hunt them. So, I can help you. But we have 3 huntable types of quail down here. What Type are you looking to hunt?
Also what part of the state are coming to hunt? Jan will be late season hunt and maybe a very hard hunt. Quail get smart quick, they quit calling and become very difficult to find. They have been hammered by this time and will flush at 75 yard and hit the ground running up hill. PM me with the where and what type and Ill try to help you out. :)
