Anyone giving it a go this weekend?

Thinking about taking the big blue boy out this weekend by himself.

I confirmed 2 weeks ago that he will not hunt with our 16 month old pup. Basically he just shuts down, sniffs, pees and goes for a walk whenever the youngster is around. :rolleyes: There went my great idea of the pup learning something from an older dog. :laugh:
 
Not this weekend

We gave it a go today in Yuma and Phillips counties. The tracks tell the story. There just aren't many birds this year. I did see more than anytime this season, but they were around farm house wind breaks. I went by the Holyoke SWA for the first time in two years and was totally amazed at how different it looks now. I just don't see the point in all that windshield time and gas cost.
 
i will be heading out this weekend with my GSP and cousin to our property we have permisson. We hunted last sunday were i missed a true double but did get the first one, saw about 30 birds total 7 being roosters. We have been finding them in the tree lines and agriculture areas, but working hard to find them. I don't mind spending the money on gas i just enjoy being out hunting in our beautiful state with my hunting buddies, Orley my GSP and my cousin with his 2 labs.
 
The end f the world must be here, the boss man is sending us home at noon! Woohoo! That will give me some time to get ready.

I think that I will head out in the morning ... not sure where, I usually have an area in mind and usually change my mind along the way. :laugh:

If nothing else, it will be a good day out with Dakota, walking the shotgun, drinking coffee and listening to country music. :cheers:
 
I will be heading east in the morning. I am taking my nephew along, he is still in search of his first wild rooster. I am also taking a husband and wife out that have never been pheasant hunting before. It looks like the weather will be nice and we should have a fun day. Hopefully I will be posting some trophy shots on Sunday.
 
My 13 year old daughter Mikayla lands here tomorrow morning, then we will go home and pack our stuff to head East with my brother-in-law and his daughter to see if we can get Mikayla her first rooster with her Great Gramma's hand me down .410 shotgun, the same gun I shot my first rooster with!! :thumbsup:

We might be able to be hunting by Saturday late afternoon, then staying the night at the Harvest Inn and eating chicken fried steak across the street with family and friends, then hunting all day Sunday.

My overall goals are #1 - to get Mikayla her first bird and get my brother-in-law a few shots as well. #2 - Having a great time with family and friends!! #3 - Of course seeing my Setter, Andy have fun doing what he does!! :cool:

Got out yesterday after the snow storm. It was a blast. Seen lots of hens and managed to get a couple of roosters. I might try and get back out on Sunday. Good luck to you guys and Merry Xmas as well!!:cheers:

Too many family obligations. Won't be out again til January.

We went out yesterday and had a good day. Hardly any wind and still a little tracking snow out in Yuma county. I wish I could of made it out on Thursday morning right after the snow. We saw quite a few tracks but most of them looked like they were a couple days old. Every field we went to had people and dog tracks in them from the previous couple of days. My nephew got into trouble so he wasn't able to go. I took my stepson and he had all kinds of fun trying to follow the pheasant tracks in the snow. The lady I took out for her first hunt had a good time a took a couple shots at a rooster but missed. She said she had fun and wants to go again. My GWP pinned one rooster in a wheat stubble field and we found another in a CRP field.
 
Went out down to the southeast area but Walsh for my first trip of the year.

Stopped on my way at Granada SWA and shot 4 ducks at dawn to get the blood flowing, and then headed south. Only saw 4 groups so that was pretty good shooting on my end:)

Pulled up to my first field... looked to my right and saw 6 roosters standing there! I pulled on down and walked back to where they were and they got up perfectly in two separate bunches. AND...

Maybe next time they will be back, because I emptied 3 shells and watched them all sail away. Ugh. Not sure if I am used to shooting ducks or what but I was pretty bummed. But optimistic, of course.

Unfortunately, my optimism soon faded. They were the first and last birds I saw all day. My lab got birdy a few times, but that was it. The cover was WAY better than I expected at the WIAs... Really not bad at all I thought, but not many birds and very few tracks. Maybe I will head back down Thursday after Christmas if the snow does show up like it is supposed to.
 
Mrs. CO_Weimar convinced me to stay close to home. :rolleyes: so we stopped off at Field Trial Game Birds, drove over to Cobb SWA, released birds and hunted them up. It was a good day. I'll put up some pics later. Ran the boys separately and all was good. The youngster had to hunt on his own, and he did just fine. Dakota was back to his usual self, and worked like a pro without the pup around.

The wind made it tough shooting today. I missed 2x on one bird that the pup pointed, fortunately I missed, otherwise it would have gone down over the lake, which was partially frozen.

Even with the snow earlier this week, it was incredibly dry.

Buying birds wasn't exactly what I had in mind today, but it was a good day out with the wife and pups.

We hunted Saturday with three dogs and saw over 60 birds majority jumped ahead of us and the ones that were holding tight were hens but we did manage to take a few "what the heck" shots but came up empty. We found alot of the birds in the tree lines the first half of the day then they were out in the wheat and cut corn the last part of the day. Had a great day with my hunting buddies (dogs and cousin), looking forward to the next weekend we head out.
 
They certainly do enjoy both ... and no doubt that they prefer pen raised birds over no birds at all! :) And so do I. It was a fun day.

We are headed to Laybourn's Hunt Club for the weekend soon, really looking forward to that trip.

Not sure if the dogs now the difference between pen raised or wild, they seem to enjoy both.
