Huns in a snow covered field would be insanely vulnerable.
In Alaska ptarmigan and grouse are routinely shot with .22 pistol and rifles.
Ptarmigan especially in winter where folks either snowshoe or snowmachine and shoot them with .22
Grouse are typically shot with .22 when they are getting gravel.
Both ruffed and spruce grouse can be very tame due to little human hunting pressure.
The spruce grouse was in my driveway getting grit at about 5 yards and the ruffed grouse in
my backyard at about 10 yards. I did not shoot them.

You can use whatever weapon you'd like in Indiana. There are no restrictions, only recommendation.
Virtually certain Illinois does not restrict weapons for upland game.
Wisconsin can only hunt with weapon that shoots arrows, bolts or shells that have more than one projectile (meaning no rifle rounds)
