Well six of us headed towards Armour, SD for our second annual trip to Uguide Cattail Haven. The bird numbers were down from last year but we still had an incredible hunt. We managed to harvest 31 birds after 4 long days of hunting, with plenty of (missed) opportunities.
Our first day walking state land near Mitchell proved to me why the investment with you guide is well worth it. Those wily state land rooster were flushing at 400 yards in a heavy wind giving us minimal chances at success. I am not saying that state land is impossible but it seemed to be darn close.
The CRP fields and shelter-belts of Cattail Haven allowed the birds to hold much tighter and the pointing dogs of the group were able to do what they do best. No matter if it was 3 or 30 birds watching our dogs work was worth the trip but pulling the trigger a few times is not too bad either. I do say that I already cannot wait for next year.
