Another Ghost Retrieve

Twenty-some pheasants, mostly hens, flushed from a thick patch of kochia in a little pocket draw Sunday morning on the high plains of western Kansas. A cock broke right and was doa in the snow drift. Finally another cock within range flushed left, straight away. I thought my aim was good and he seemed to rock, but he kept going as if unhurt. I moved from the north side of the pocket to the south side along the western rim and then moved southeast into an extension of the same kochia patch, but no more birds were there. Gus the Brittany had disappeared and I began calling him as I moved south to continue my intended line on the sunny side of the main draw. After about a minute, here comes Gus from the south with a freshly dead cock in his mouth. Good dog!

Kinda makes a guy forgive the chewed up shoes and such! No wonder we love our dogs.
