Ammo for OLD SXS's

#5s and #6s on the State hunting land for pheasants; #4s and #5s in steel for jump shooting ducks; #2 and #4s steel for goose (been a while) and #4s and #5s lead for turkey.
Most often 20ga, occasionally 12ga for turkey and goose in lead and steel respectively.
Rarely 3in for ducks, most often 2 3/4 for every thing.
Decades ago, used 7 1/2 for pheasants and never felt under-gunned. Things changed a bit when I had Mick, the ESS, was taking further shots more often.

I use 1oz in my 16 Sterly , 1200 fps 2 3/4. Or RST 1 oz 21/2inch . 20 ga I use 1165 fps in 5s or 6s. Usually Winchester shells. I do have some 20 ga RST in 2 1/2 inch as well.

So you can find Winchester 5's 1 oz? I really like the Winchester 8's for Quail.

Lubers, Thanks for the tip. I went on Fox Collectors and several guys like them there also. Great Reviews on Boss. I'm going to get a couple of boxes of 5's and try them out.

In my 12 gauge sterlingworth I have shot 1 1/4 high velocity loads for a decade. Lately I have been shooting boss 1 1/4 loads for the last couple years when required. No issues although its been restocked and glass bedded chokes opened
In my 16 gauge foxes I shoot mostly hand loads 1oz sometimes 1 1/8 I have also been a fan of the b&p f1s
In my JP Sauer 16 I shoot golden pheasants again the gun has been restocked
In my Thomas Bland 12 gauge hammer gun I shoot hand loads 1 1/8 with federal paper hulls at 1250 to 1300 fps.
I doubt you could blow up a old double. Sherman Bell did a test published in the double gun journal with some old poor condition sxs's and shot proof loads though them and did no damage the barrels athough some stocks turned into spliters. The original stock on my 12 gauge sterlingworth was cracked and in poor shape when first got it but I knew going into it and made it a good canidate for restocking it worked out. 100 year old wood stocks are the weak point in vintage guns.
If you get into vintage guns you may consider getting into reloading

Paper hulls would be awesome. I wish RST would fire back up their production of paper hull loads.
