Advice for CO X-Mas day hunt

Hello fellow hunters,
My father, brother and myself are planning a hunt on X-mas day. Just the three of us and no dog. heading out east towrds Phillips County. Any suggestions and/or tips? Thanks & happy holiday's.

Please do not take this the wrong way, however this time of year without dogs, it will be difficult....I don't have much experience in Phillips county, I have only hunted in/and around Kit Carson and in Kansas. I do have dogs and I do know this, it can be very difficult getting to WILD roosters this time of year without a dog....good luck though and Merry Christmas....

If y'all are planning a Christmas family thing, I would highly recommend a hunt club type place (like Quail Run or RMR). No, I don't have any stake in any of them, I do not belong to either one. I have hunted at both in the past. I don't work for them nor am I hunting buddies with anyone who works there.

I merely suggesting that because instead of the gas spent driving out to Phillips county and whatever else, you could possibly use on hunting out there. There is another place down here by the Springs called Box T that just stsrted. I will PM you some information....

While it may be more difficult without dogs it is by no means impossible, especially given the numbers we have this year. I've shot plenty of late season Colorado birds with and without dogs so don't be discouraged at all. Just plan your approaches with tactics in mind (don't slam doors, be fast on foot, and block whenever possible) and expect longer shots. Of course, if there's snow on the ground (who knows if we'll EVER get any down here) that's a whole different game (and an easier one at that)!

I second the comment that, although it may be more difficult without dogs, get on out, give it a try and have some fun. If the birds are flushing wild, they're going to be flushing wild whether you have a dog or not. In fact, with no dog thrashing around, they might even flush a little tighter.

Make sure you mark 'em well when they drop, though :)

That's probably the biggest point is you won't have anyone to retrieve them, however if you have a well trained dog, then you shouldn't have to worry about your dog flushing or running about birds...

Dogless hunting

Hope for as much wind as possible. Find a draw with some cover. Get out of your vehicle well away from the area you will hunt, on the downwind side. Hunt into the wind. Make no noise slaming truck doors or putting rounds into your gun and whisper; BE Quiet! Move into the area slowly and walk 5 or 6 paces in one direction and stop for 10 seconds. Walk another 5 or 6 paces in another direction and stop. Keep changing direction as you move thru the draw. Make as little noise as possible as you walk. If you work an area in this manner, you will have the best chance of putting up birds. Good luck.
