Addison's Disease

Have had a rough week with Bleu. After a stint at the Vet where she almost didn't come through , tests are revealing she has Addison's!!! Anyone on the Forum here dealt with this??? Thanks

I have a friend that does. He has to giver her a shot every day for her lifetime. It works fine and you would never know. However the meds are not cheap. But not bank breaking either. If you would like to chat with him I am sure he would talk to you about it.

Ken, could you P.M. me his number!!! She is not doing very well!!!

Coming down off the prednisone slowly. 1 1/4 pill 2 times a day for 2 weeks and then 1 pill 2 times a day for 2 weeks, then a half a pill 2 times a day for 2 weeks. Have to come off the Steriod shot slowly. Also treating a infection with Cipro. Could be another factor causing this organ to do what it is doing. The dreaded C word.

It's my understanding that many dogs have the gene but need some form of a stressor to make it pop. I don't know if thats true. Just what I was told, never goggled it or nothing. I don't know if it's hereditary or not. Best time to call will be about 5 ish, leave your # 2 and he will call you back. But that shot basically keeps his dog looking 100% normal.

Thanks for your help!! Vet told me it would require a shot every 4-6 weeks at about 135 bucks a shot!

Randy never heard from ya, but I copied his email. He said pregnazone was not enough and the shot is once a month I guess. He was able to buy the percortin on line for 80 bucks a bottle. He told his vet that and the vet matched the price. First the vet was double, go figure. I will ask where he found it. But thats the shot.

Piper gets 1.2 ml of percortin a month in a shot, she gets .2 milligrams of prednisone a day.

I should know tonight after work where the bottle of stuf comes from, how much, and how many shots. But try to google it too and I am sure you will get it way cheaper. Then just buy needles at the fleet store in 100 pack boxes, and give the shot your self. It's easy, I do it all the time for all our shots, pups etc. His vet at first tried to rape him on the price of that shot too. But then he came down to earth when he called him out on it a little.:D

Here you go bleu, His reply, hope this helps, I was off a little on $ but still cheaper. Good luck.

"I pay $169 for the bottle which is 3 months worth \ 3 shots. Here are some links for the same size 4 ml bottle. I use 1.3ml per shot\month."

The shot is easy to give in neck just like a puppy shot.

Sub-Quataneous or Int muscle?????
Becareful neck shots for the inexperienced can harm a pup!

That is great information Ken and a heck of a lot cheaper!! Bleu got her first dose today and now I have to drop the Pred dosage every 3 days until I get to the expected levels! I guess it will be 10 days and I will be at a constant dose per day. Hope there is no other underlying factors causing this!! We think it was the stress of the whelping and c-section that started this. She really has not been the same since then, but could not pinpoint anything until she crashed. Your help is greatly appreciated!!!!

I am aware of that. Any one should seek how to do a shot from a vet first. There not dart boards,:D but it is not difficult either. And once shown, any one should be capable. I have done many many many, and no dog has dropped dead yet.

email me anytime, I am a veterinarian and my field-bred springer had addisons, I deal with it monthly in practice and have many active cases. mfors237@aol.com

Thanks you guy's!!! Been a rough ride!!!! Down to 10 mg of pred and doing a lot better!!!! Shivering and panting has stopped and she has all her appetite back and then some!!! Been getting into mischief, Barking, Howling and trying to chase the pups around!!!! She took a baggy off the table that was full of Elk teeth and found Elk teeth all over hell!!! Hope she didn't eat any, cause I am not recovering any that were swallowed!!!

hopefully you can continue to drop the pred dose to around 5 mg/day. I have had a few dogs that poorly tolerated prednisone over time and had to use other corticosteroids...medrol etc. My personal springer did well with 5mg pred/day plus the percorten shots every 28-33 days.
