I think V-John (if he still frequents here) has hunted on the Ft before but didnt know if he had ever hunted at the bombing range?

Id always seen it on the map but was hunting the area last year when just out of curiosity I drove up to the gates to check it out -- I swore it said something about hunting and checking in etc?

Can you hunt here and does anyone else know how you go about it? The Ft Riley access seems pretty straightforward and the info on how to get there is online - only thing I cant find is where you buy the permit to hunt there.

Anyways any help would be appreciated - if you prefer to PM me thats fine too.

Thanks!

My BIL lives south of Salina and we cut through there on our way out to Kanapolis. I've asked him about the fishing before. It seems like he said you needed an escort? More restrictive than Ft. Riley for sure. If I can remember I'll ask him next week.

any possibility of "duds" being out there?

when I was in the army ( long time ago:) ) that was the reason for the restricted access

The Bomb range and anything the Army owns are two seperate things. The Army Guard has a very small section of the range and I don't think you can actually hunt it but could be wrong.

The Kansas Air National Guard owns all the rest of it which encompasses X amount of square miles. It's a bunch. Some is permanantly off limits and some you can hunt depending on if there are any jets operating in the area.

There used to be a class you had to take before you could hunt it and there is a sign in procedure. I think it may be a little more strict than what Ft Riley requires.

I don't know anyone out there anymore or I would be able to tell you exactly. You can go to their website and it would most likely contain all the info you need.

Thanks for the replies -- I've done some digging/calling myself this morning and may have hit a brick wall. Based on information I have it appears you have to be active or retired military with a DOD card only - however it appears and I have been advised that is/probably is against the law in all technicality. I need to read more of the sikes act in detail.

I have a call in to someone at the KDWPT so we will see if I get anywhere. They mentioned it in their regs so I figured it meant and per the sign on the outside of the installation they do allow hunting.

So it may be into next year before I find out if the door is slammed shut but never hurts to expand the places I can go.

I'm retired Air Force and my wife is from Salina and one of my daughters lives there. I stopped in a few years ago and inquired about deer hunting there. I was told I had to put my name on a waiting list and someone would contact me. Well, I put my name, address and phone number down but did anyone ever contact me? No. I got the impression the hunting there is "reserved" for those who are good friends with ANG personnel and who also meet the requirements of being AD or retired. I'd really like to hunt there but I too ran up against a brick wall. Maybe I'll ask again when my wife and I head back that way in March to see my daughter and the rest of my wife's family.
