A Little Chicken hunting

Made it out for a little chicken hunting , these birds always seem to be hard to come and it seems to take a fair amount of boot leather to get them .

The first day of our hunt we left east part of the state around 3;30 in the morning to get were we needed to be at a decent time . The first day we walked 10 miles plus and put up a couple flocks and the edge of shotgun range but we found a pattern emerging . We saw birds in Alfalfa fields early . The following day we set up behind a few Alfalfa Bales in field we knew birds would be using and I was lucky enough to pull a double with my DT sxs 20 Ga.

I am thinking the uplands could be a little more bountiful this season , is anybody else seeing a few more birds than last year ?

Great picture! I hunted 8 days for chickens the past two weeks and will post a report to not hijack your post. As far as more birds in the uplands, yes and no. I saw more chickens than I can remember seeing in a long time. Driving around we saw good numbers of quail along the roads and the dogs pointed several coveys in areas I didn't expect to see quail. I didn't see near the pheasant along the roads I have seen in the past. Heard some crowing in the mornings but even that was down compared to normal. Now with that said the cover looks great and I think the birds are there and hard to see because of the lush thick cover. Plenty of crops still in but in the last week a lot of beans and corn has been cut. The milo didn't look far behind as combines were being staged. I hope the pheasant numbers are up higher than I think they are. November 12 will tell all.

What neat birds. Beautiful.

Sounds like a great day. Thank you for sharing!

One of the best photos posted, great to see a young man out and not having his head stuck in some video reality game, when true reality is just on the other side of the door. Great parenting. Regards.

Thanks a bunch , this little guy added a lot to the hunt and memories of anticipation and excitement for the hunt . He walked from sun up to sundown with me and his dad . We left Topeka at 3:30 am and quit at near dark, fun and real trooper .

He and many other kids posted on here are the future and the face of hunting in the 21 st century .

As odenney said that is one of the best photos I've seen, it captures a big part of the reason I hunt: Great Memories. Congratulations and keep up the good work.

Got to get out on Monday for a little while. Hunted the morning. Got really hot. Was a little wet where we were so it got humid too. Took off mid day and went back at it in the evening for a couple of hours. Saw 3 different groups total. Couldnt get close to 2 of the groups. Tree dwellers. The 3rd group got up about 20 yards in front of the dogs on point. About 50 yards in front of me.Had 4 dogs locked up. As I approached they flushed wild. I took a tough shot but no good. Got to shoot my gun at least. Found some quail too but didnt find any chickens that were alone or just a pair.
