A good day of quail hunting

Fellow forum member, onlyapointer and I met up today for a little quail hunt locally and not only did we have good conversation but also got into a few birds. Even though our shooting was sub par we ended up just a couple short of 2 limits.

First spot we turned the pointers loose on obie locked up near a pond dam and Bryan's dog, Newt also caught scent and locked up at the same time. These birds were track stars and we flushed them probably 50 yards from where the dogs were pointing. Followed them down the hedgerow and newt found a good portion of the covey and Obie came in to back him. Took 5 birds from 2 different coveys on the first spot.

Second spot Obie pointed a covey 380 yrds or so from us but these birds Apparanrly ran off from him and he lost them I supposed because he didn't relocate and along comes newt and absolutey pinned them about 40 yrds from where Obie had them and I think we took 3 from this covey. Thank you newt!!

The third spot we kind of stumbled upon and found this covey of birds that would be track stars extrodonar. Several points only to find the birds had moved. Finally caught up to them and took a few more from this gene pool of runners. The last spot was probably the best of the day except for the shooting (at least mine). Obie pinned a huge covey and the birds split in half with some going into a milo field and others going into crp. The dogs had several nice points and the birds held very well providing us with what would have been easy shooting for someone more proficient with a scatter gun.

The dogs were on fire today and let me tell you Bryan's dog newt is a super nice dog to hunt over and has a nose on him. Never seen a dog that you can say "back" to and he absolutely skids (literally) to a stop!

We ended up with just a couple short of two limits but most importantly enjoyed some very nice dog work and a great way to spend a Sunday.

Thanks for going Bryan I know you had a long drive. Hopefully we can get out at least a few more times and you can school me not only on quail shooting but perhaps some pheasant shooting as well.
