4TH Quater Rooster!

It's hard to believe but at least as the early pheasant season is concerned, we are in the 4th quarter, with only about a week to go.
We took Friday off and headed up to camp. We decided to hunt the spot that we found at the end of last season. This farm has outstanding cover. Any birds around this time of year are really spooky and it takes a well seasoned dog to pin them down. Dugan has been having a great season and he didn't disappoint today.Even though this is a either sex area we shoot only Roosters on these type of farms. There are some really good things happening in this part of the state. So it's the 4th quarter guys, get out there if you can!

Good work and nice picture! He looks like a health bird. Did you guys get into a lot of birds this year? How much do you plan to get out next week?

I plan to get out next Monday and Wednesday for sure. I was going to go out for a bit Thanksgiving morning but we now have 20 people coming to our house. So I may have to stay home to help get things ready. I should be good to go for Friday and Saturday.

I was down at the club early today and I met a guy that was there with his 12 year old son. I offered to use my dogs and they were more than happy to have me walk along. In less than an hour the boy had his first two pheasants of his life. Him and his dad were very happy.

Thanks Brian, he was healthy alright, he ran like a track star till Dugan sprinted ahead of him and turned him back. This particular farm doesn't receive birds from the PGC because it's situated further back and hard to get to, there's a Co-Op down the road a piece that does receive some birds. We know this farm has hold overs.
It's been a GREAT year, we've had action every time out. A couple of times after very long rides, we were done way to early, but that's a good problem to have!
We have next week off, so we should be at it pretty hard.
I seen in your post that you saw a nice Buck, we've been seeing a lot also. I think the rut is still on!
Good luck next week.

How are your quail doing? Any signs from the ones from last year?

I have not seen any of last year's quail that I know of. I do find quail in different areas but I think they are from this year. When we had all that rain I had to leave all the birds out of the one pen because the feed tube got all messed up. Last week the dogs found a covey of 12 quail in the switchgrass and I have found them in the woods before as well. Some people told me they saw some quail over the summer and that was 3 or 4 miles from where I released them. So who knows where they ended up. I hope some of this year's birds make it into the summer. I liked hearing them call while I fish at the pond.
