Hello everyone. Thanks for the add.
Next year my English Springer Spaniel will
be around 2 years of age, and I want to start planning a trip to Pheasant hunt
The Dakotas, Kansas, Neb. Eastern Montana, Wyoming, Colorado.
Plan on camping, for I know most things rooms hotels ect.. are most likely already booked.

So even with that thought, back country areas would be fine, fun and great.
I'm open to any idea, suggestions and help.
I will need to do a self hunt, can not afford a guide, we're saving up for the trip starting next month.
On a retired budget, so that's what I'm facing.
Thanks Mi28Ga.

If you don’t want to camp there should be no issue with finding lodging in most if not all of your choices. Keep in mind some of the farther north destinations a get some really cold weather anytime after late October.

Thanks Matt D. Yes I know I live in Michigan, Have lived in Montana Idaho and Wyoming. I thank you for that information. Just looking for info on where to go, again, back country is fine. Use to be a guide, so not a worry. Have a tent and stove, good gear sleeping bags ect. Thanks.

Welcome to the forum.
Here in Kansas our pheasant and quail seasons run through January 31st. There can be some really nice late season hunts and especially after a snow event.

Thanks M.R. Byrd, that's a great piece of information, would i assume right that the hunting (people pressure has calmed down?.
What about public land hunting?.
I'll check the state website for season time frames and license costs.
Thanks

There are a few pheasants on public land in SD. I would be shocked if you couldn't find a hotel in December or January. The bulk of pheasant hunters are fair weather folks.

Agreed. The more snow, the fewer hunters there are. (*hint to mother nature*...more snow please!)

In some areas, like NE, the walleye fishermen are thick, and do eat up some rooms. But even with that, I have been able to find lodging when I hunted up there.

Well I like to use my Wall Tent and stove. I paid good money for all this gear. "I'm not worried about where to sleep. I want to know where to go hunt Pheasants.

You could try Redfield, Aberdeen, Mitchell, Huron, Gettysburg, Miller, DeSmet, Gettysburg, Kimball, Vivian, Murdo, Parkston, Platte, Britton, Ellendale, Canby, Akaska, Niobrara, Ortonville, Estherville, Pipestone, Big Stone, Groton, or Hilger.

Stay away from Coddington county, and specifically the Kampeska area. Very few pheasant there and the ones that do live there are nearly impossible to kill.

Town namer! Shame! :ROFLMAO:

P.S. You forgot Sisseton, Vermillion, Edgemont, Buffalo, and Proctor.

Where in MI do you reside? I was born/raised in GR.

Kansas has been hit pretty hard the last few years by drought. I can't speak for the other places, but SD might be your best bet for public land access and hunting.

Thanks for that piece of information, these are the things I need to know, it helps me to seek other placed, much appreciated.
I grew up in Saginaw, in the late 60's my Mother and I moved to a small town north of GR called Mecosta, then some years later I lived off Ann street, worked at a couple shops in GR "Irwin Seating off from Fruit Ridge, and the other shop was off 28th street.

Mecosta! I have very fond memories of that area growing up. We used to camp all the time on Horsehead Lake. I have been to a lot of the other lakes in that area. My grandparents lived in White Cloud.

Small world! We were in the old campground on the west/SW side of the lake for YEARS and my parents and grandparents had their trailers in the same spot for at least 20 years in the late 60's - 80's.

We more than likely passed each other on that lake, the road or somewhere in the area, we crusid it looking for chicks, fished it, water skied, duck hunted part of it, and Ice fished it througtout the years.

The hunting in western NE and eastern CO has been very poor the past 5 years. I’d skip those in favor of more productive states. You can find a bird here and there but it’s honestly not worth the cost of the license for either state in my opinion. I live in CO and don’t even bother to pheasant hunt here. NE is marginally better which ain’t saying much.

Thanks for this information. I appreciate everyone's help. I think I'm leaning for late season South Dakota 2025

So I believe i'll try hunting South Dakota next season. Does anyone know of anything that SD presents that might be a safety issue to my dog. Things to look out for. Thanks.
