12-10-13 Hunt

Got my deer on Sunday and decided to do a bit of bird hunting on Tuesday. My buddy and I managed 5 in a couple hour, two field hunt near Perry. We saw decent numbers, suprisingly not bunched up. We shot well, 5 for 5, and I managed my limit on 3-3, all points by Gunner. The first I actually saw the rooster's tail and considered trying to jump on him, but he got the boot instead. I've done that a couple times before, laid my gun down and attempted to catch him by hand, only one attempt being successful. :)

BTW, the second rooster from the right was still molting! Can you believe that?

Nice.....glad to hear you got your deer with your buddies as well. This was my dinner Sunday night at the cabin. Tender doe loins. Gunner looks a bit chilly there. Looks like a nice day in the field!

Oh well, not sure what is up but I have been having trouble trying to load pics here ever since our hunt in November. I guess I am going to have to give up or get some help. Never had a problem till now with pics.

FWIW, I upload my pics to Snapfish, copy the URL, then use the Image icon on this site, pasting the link within. I don't actually upload the image to this site as that's never worked well for me.

Glad you too got a deer! I processed all of mine myself, with a friend. Shot her on Sunday, skinned and deboned that night, then ground her Monday night. Cooked some of her up yesterday!

Atta boy!

Looks like a great hunt Nate.

I enjoy cold winter hunts. Temps are low enough to consider frostbite on the dog's nose!:p

I too was blessed with a deer early in the season this year. He is at the processor now.

Nate did you see many deer? I would say they were up slightly in my area but remember I only saw nine in four days of hunting this area last year.

I giggled when I remembered two of my wife's grinders that I burned up trying to grind deer some years ago. They weren't up to that sinew challenge.

Hoping to get out later this week with Sophie. Semester exams as of late.

I hunted Saturday and Sunday near Colfax / Prairie City and I'd estimate we saw comparable numbers to recent years. We saw 60-80 I'd guess.

I don't know if I have asked before if you are sitters or drivers?

Driving deer yields much higher sightings but not necessarily as much success in my opinion.

I deer hunt in the same way that I pheasant hunt minus the dog. Same cover and same approach which yields me short running shots.

I would not see as many as you with this approach. Is your group more of the "brown and down" philosophy or "horns" approach?

Nice job Nate.

Do you ever boot Gunnar?

I would guess with a short coated dog you should hae the same isues I do. I ended up booting mine to help keep the snow ball out of the pads.

I found this sled dog supply store that hand makes these really really thin boot. I think I pay 1.50 a boot. SO if I lose one it isnt a big deal. It keeps us hunting longer. Especially when things are frozen and sharp.

Today we hunted for a short time. It was very cold and I found that my new boots should have been insulates. My feet got cold. I will deal with it I guess.
I never got a shot off and I made a bad mistake with my citori. In trying to keep up with a much faster hunter, I grew tired and needed a rest. I layed y broke open gun on the ground(at the momnet I didnt care). When I went to close it, the lever wouldnt active.............I think you all know what I mean. SO it wouldnt shoot. Stupid thing to do.

Heading back out tomorrow. Good luck to all.

We drive deer, with walkers and sitters. Have been doing it long enough now that we've nearly assigned spots. We hunt dozens of farms and all kinds of cover. Public and private.

I'd agree this approach yields far more sightings but most out of range. I don't shoot unless I'm very comfortable with the shot. No woundings for me.

Our group takes only larger bucks (150+ class) and bigger does. Everything else gets a pass ... but we've had a few kills where the deer must have looked bigger while running. ;-)

Boots for Gunner ... yes, I've tried them ... or was that with my first dog Murphy? Either way, to say it didn't go well would be an understatement.

I did a bunch of research online, measured his feet, read reviews that included suggestions to duct tape the tops, etc. Upon receiving them from Cabela's, and trying them, it just didn't work. Imagine how a cat acts when something is stuck to his foot. Was funny in many ways. He didn't want to move, and just never got acclimated to them despite my training attempts.

My initial interest in the boots was to prevent cuts from the ice. Snow balls aren't an issue as he doesn't have fur between his toes. My buddy's setter on the other hand, will naw at this pads all day.
