    Snakes out?

Depends on what you mean by 'central'. If you are just East of the MO river, should have few problems. I hear they are more prevalent near and West of the river, but I steer clear so no firsthand knowledge. Never seen one in 15 years (East river) during pheasant season. Having said that, steer...

    SD Road Report

I recently went from MN to West of Aberdeen and back without seeing a single bird. When it is windy you will not see many out. Without any dew (or much moisture period) no need to go into the open to dry out. And 9am+ is not prime viewing hours. But I hear you - back 'in the day' you would see...

    Saturday is opener

Happens all the time. Sit on a spot for 2 hrs just to have people roll up right at shooting time, get out, slam doors, fumbling with gear and yelling at dogs... MN opener is a zoo, but I would not miss it. There are just more hunters on opener than there are decent spots so having the field to...

South dakota (and north) roadside survey.

I don't make the laws. But a 12 year old kid can use some handicap to create a great experience. Most adults have the attention span, shooting/hunting experience, and physical ability to burn boot leather all day to scrap out a few birds on public land. This is a chance to build some great...

South dakota (and north) roadside survey.

Youth hunt is a blast. We did that before our kids aged out. I really miss it - Have the whole state to yourself and every piece of public ground is virgin. I think we saw one other truck in 4 years.

    Looking for expert opinions

The correct answer is 'it depends'... I think you could do pretty well with a few key things: 1. Get the book Modern Pheasant Hunting and read it. It's not that long and only $5 (used) on Amazon. Will answer all the questions above and many you do not know to ask yet...

    Passing through SD…Pheasants Galore

I find it a just irony that once they stopped the roadside count the majority of the state experienced several of the best years of the last 15 or so (except 2021 drought) in terms of bird numbers. And they took away the means to show that improvement prior to the season start each year - The...

Puppy Research - Identifying Litters w/ Bloodlines

Fair question. I hesitate to answer as I do not want the thread to turn to 'here are some dogs that do all that', but here goes: It goes back to what I value more in a dog for my situation and me wanting to follow my own experiences vs 'the talk of the training and hunting clubs' (despite that...

Puppy Research - Identifying Litters w/ Bloodlines

Yes, but I don't want the thread to go off the rails... Per my OP, not looking for recommendations on breeders or all the other great dogs out there. No shortage of that being covered in countless other threads. Was looking for a (less manual) way to research litters based on specific dogs in...

Puppy Research - Identifying Litters w/ Bloodlines

More than one line I'm looking for, but unequal levels of importance. Which is why it would be great to be able to type in multiple names and get a report of how strong the match is and what litters are upcoming. Looks like that is wishful thinking on my part. Directly to your question though...

Puppy Research - Identifying Litters w/ Bloodlines

Nice looking pedigrees. Several desirable names on there but the one that I am after the most is missing.

Puppy Research - Identifying Litters w/ Bloodlines

Yes - hunting for a lab. PM me the pedigree links and I will take a look. Fair warning: Per my OP, I am looking (hoping) for some specific lines.

Puppy Research - Identifying Litters w/ Bloodlines

Yes - I understand that the screenings do not guarantee dysplasia will not show up. The disappointing part was how the breeder reacted when I gave him a courtesy call to let him know it was in those lines (hoping he would use the feedback to better his breeding). He went full on defensive -...

Puppy Research - Identifying Litters w/ Bloodlines

Thanks for the response and that is the challenge. Everyone loves their breeder and their dogs so that is what they recommend. No shortage of recommendations or happy customers. And every breeder is convinced that they have the perfect recipe. I (and others in my hunting group) have followed...

Puppy Research - Identifying Litters w/ Bloodlines

There must be an easier way... With all the digital resources available: Online pedigrees, forums, Google, AI, etc., I feel like I am doing this the hard way. Looking for upcoming litters w/ specific bloodlines. Hours of wading through pedigrees on huntinglabpedigree.com, looking through tons...

    Dog scratching constantly

Maybe we have different definitions of pricey. It is on-par with PP and cheaper to buy local than on Chewy. If someone is feeding their dog Ol' Roy quality / price food maybe that would be a place to start. I'm aware of the DCM 'link' that has been buzzing in recent years. Grain free has been...

    Dog scratching constantly

Grain-free foods are not that pricey. Taste of the Wild (high quality) is ~$50/bag. My first dog was crapping liquid frequently for his first 6 months. We switched him to that and it cleared up. Have both dogs on it now.

    Dog scratching constantly

Adding fish oil to the food helped my dogs with itching. Nothing miraculous but noticeable difference.

    State land vs federal/wia/crep

I agree - federal WPAs are usually one of the better spots for decent pheasant habitat. Not perfect - still exposed to haying and grazing, but I find them much better than state GPAs, generally speaking. The state owned GPAs seem to be a set and forget operation. Seems like they were planted...

    State land vs federal/wia/crep

CREP and WIA is exactly that: Free hunting on private land.
