    Montana

The rancher we hunt on up there said there are bird hunters, then there are pheasant hunters. Most of my life I've never made the distinction. But in western states it starts to make sense

leader in habit and quail success

I think the big picture here is. Cattle CAN be good for quail, if the area is not overgrazed. And the cattle don't stomp down all the woody cover. Also needs to be thick escape cover. If its easy to walk through, then it's not good escape cover. Keeping several types of grass in the pasture...

Unhappy with my home state (MN) hunters.

I agree with the above statement. I think there are more hunters in MN that leave their homestate to pursue other game or bag limits. So its more a numbers thing. I also agree that there are bad apples in every group of people. But I have had 2 rude experiences in the field. Both in Kansas...

Hopefully missouri stays on the upswing. Pheasant numbers were down but I thought quail numbers were very good in both missouri and Kansas. Covey sizes were impressive. I think people and conservation dept. have finally figured put what they need. This year, if the habitat was there, so...

just a thought to bring upland birds to the public

That's a great way to look at it. I hope you are right! I've been alive long enough to see bird numbers be Good, Bad, O.K, Bad, then ok again. If you find the habitat usually there are birds or at least signs of em. Hopefully the habitat continues on the upswing. If CRP isn't the answer...

    2022 hunts have begun

Birds were in good numbers. More sharptails than huns. But I think part of that was the terrain we were in. There was one area that held good hun numbers. I'd love to come back for pheasants but I think I'm only good for that drive once a year!

just a thought to bring upland birds to the public

The last part of your post is correct. Quail restoration will work. If done on a larger scale it will be even better. Habitat is the key. Which means disturbance, and let it be.

just a thought to bring upland birds to the public

What I'm saying is, "putting out pen raised quail to repopulate and help restore the quail population is a very misguided statement." Period. Wont work. As for the quail emphasis areas, they preached 1 bird per every 2 acres. So that would mean on 3000 acres you would have 1500 quail. That's...

    2022 hunts have begun

If I had this much open prairie to chase birds on all the time. I dont know if I would go anywhere else to hunt. If pheasant season was open we would have been shooting limits of those too. Was a pretty great 4 days. Wish more seasons were open, I would hunt my way back home!

just a thought to bring upland birds to the public

The quail emphasis areas are just places where they study the quail. Leave wings in the box, test for eye worms, etc. It doesn't necessarily mean that the quail numbers are good. Most of the quail emphasis areas don't have any habitat outside of the conservation area itself. So they have...

    Recommendations for quail food

You should be feeding game bird or show bird feed. It has everything the normal farm bird feed doesn't have. I put the food up high and the water down low. Keeps them from sitting in it and keeps it dry. Also it keeps them flying up to get food so conditions them better.

    To Blue Dog

Thats a bummer buddy! Always hurts to lose a dog. Good one or bad. You're due for a good year though after last year. See ya in the field pretty soon.
