    First chicks of the year

Got to watch 2 hens with broods crossing the road from soybean field to crp stand tonight. Groups were about 100 feet apart and crossed nearly at the same time. First group had 2/3 size of mom birds 15 of them. Second group 1/2 size of mom and 12 of them so very large broods as hatch and...

    First chicks of the year

Just saw first of the year chicks but was a fun watch for other reasons.. A badger crossed the field and entered the ditch and mother hen and one chick bolted. And a pheasant rooster was there as well the badger chased the hen across the road and all the way across another field with rooster...

Unhappy with my home state (MN) hunters.

Doesn't apply to those who charge fees to hunt. Also the law is grey on who is responsible for those who get hurt entering land without landowner permission to retrieve "wounded" animals. Since the landowner never gave permission to enter but the state took that right from the landowner they...

Unhappy with my home state (MN) hunters.

I don't see a lot of MN hunters on this side of the state but ones I did weren't careful as they shot at pheasants from a field across a busy highway...didn't appreciate that. I have had one of the worst years ever for trespassers. Because deer numbers are lower than average they are taking...

    What's up with that?

Went for a drive down my usual roads on opening morning and saw a couple of groups of hunters. I drive those roads quite often and rarely see a bird but today they were everywhere. Just that little bit of hunter pressure and they came out from every corner I guess. nice to see them as I was...

    Broods

Went out again last night just to drive up and down the road on a quick trip to see if anything was about. Saw a clutch in my newly seeded 15 acre habitat project. ( wheat grasses.switch, alfalfa, sunflowers and cover crop barley. Hope it turns out well. saw a hen at the edge of the wheat field...

    Broods

Yes great conditions ...could use a little rain now. Grasshoppers are thick. Lots of butterflies and flys. Ornery biting flies. I have seen a couple roosters with hens still and some hens alone. Should be some good winter cover as it seems the farmers aren’t cutting everything. Tons of hay...

    Broods

I have been going to the farm and watching last couple of weeks with very little seen as far as broods go. Tonight something changed, in just 1/8 mile of road I had 4 broods cross. I like that when they go from my grass to the grain field across the road as I get a perfect count that way. 1...

    Moisture coming….

What a slap in the face.....went to the farm after I had been snowed in for 4 days and the area (20) acres I am going to burn down and reseed with high quality seed mix for pheasant habitat was completely blown clear of any snow whatsoever and it's a low flat area......well that's a foot up the...

    Moisture coming….

Had 2 roosters and 3 hens that would walk by my house along highway ditch before storm. Lost one rooster day before storm by a hot rodding teenager. Been looking for them the past 2days and just now saw the rooster but no signs of hens. Hope they show up soon.

    Pheasants at night

I have several roosting in my Russian Olive trees some days.....occasionally they will be in elms. Rare times I have had them in a pine as well. Seems damp morning/evenings they tend to more often but some days with even hot dry weather they perch there as well. I don’t have any coyotes but some...

    ND mixed reviews

Looks like great cover despite the drought conditions.......wish mine was even close to that.....looks like your dog got sun burnt from the extreme heat this year LOL

    ND mixed reviews

Funny stuff.....yeah my first thought was (did they turn that old "no Hunting" sign around and bend it down to get into that great cover?. But I know no one would post a pic of that if it wasn't on the up and up. just trying to find humor in every situation I think.

    Pheasant coloration

Drove down the road by my place yesterday at the right time as I caught 3 roosters by surprise. They ducked down best they could in shallow grass/weeds instead of taking to flight or running off as they usually do. I went by fast enough so as to not push them off. On the return trip I drove...
