Is this an old or young pheasant?

It only took 1 dog to retrieve it. LOL. Dead when it hit the ground. I have talked to a lot of folks, including a 70+ year old buddy of mine in SD that has been hunting there since the limit was 10 there. Nobody has ever seen a double spur directly. Most have never even heard of one.

    Slowing your dog

NEVER train a pointer to sit. Train them to whoa and/or heel. If the dog is outrunning its nose, you have your work cut out for you. If not, let the dog roll! I had a 90 lb ep that the first year I had him, he would hunt hundreds of yards out, for hours. I did practically nothing with him over...

    Cimarron this weekend?

Our hunt near Syracuse did not go very well. 2 of us killed 2 roosters & 2 quail. The Ark river bottoms held a lot of quail, but after both gsps got quilled we quit hunting in the willows on the river banks & only saw 1 more covey. 3 days, but we did not hunt real hard. Less than half a day each...

    Grouse, season start, and snares

I am a Coast Guard licensed charter captain & state licensed fishing guide for over 30 years. I run boats on Lake Erie up to 60’. I handle thousands of fish taken by sports fishermen every year. Fishing is definitely the cruelest thing you can do to an animal. You bring that fish up from over...

    Cimarron this weekend?

I hunted near Marion yesterday a little. Even back roads were pretty good, but to get into a field I had to wade thru snow way over my knees. I drove out to Syracuse today & after Larned, there was only 2-3” of snow. None near syracuse. It was raining a little about an hour ago

    Brush pants with zipper legs

Dan’s also makes pants & bibs that have no canvas or denim, these are solid nylon & are briarproof. These are made in SE Ohio, in Amish country, probably by Amish. Ruffed grouse or raccoon hunting in Appalachia is way tougher than any place I have hunted in the plains states, or MI, or WI, or...

    Brush pants with zipper legs

I wore WOW,(Wick Outdoor Works), chaps for 40+ years, & still do occasionally. My go to now is: I bought 2 pair of nylon faced Walls pants at Gabe’s for $10 each. I had my canvas guy put heavy knee high YKK zippers in them for another $12 each. If it is wet/snowy I wear gaiters over them. If it...
