    Opening weekend

So I am about 99% sure it used to be the first weekend in November. Kansas was always second weekend and in the northwest part of Kansas you couldn’t find a last second room that weekend. We stayed in Alma Nebraska more than once that second weekend after the opening crew had left.

    Corn and lots of it

I drove down 281 in SD north to south from ND line. I started counting corn fields to stay awake. I stopped at around 130 just north of Huron when it got dark. At that point I did my sixth grade math on it and came up with about 35% harvested. That was last Thursday. All beans were gone.

    Style

I am with you, I don’t think trying to hit a Gatorade bottle a couple times in the middle of the night would work for me. I did a fair amount of tent hunting when I was young and am hardly Gucci now. Relatively clean, hot shower and cable TV is about my only requirement

Real time hunting report, making amends

Wow that’s pretty graphic…. Sounds like someone possibly has some unresolved trauma with his Catholic upbringing…. I can certainly relate

Iowa hunters, how was your opener?

It is certainly thinning out. I was at the motel in Mitchell this week and there were a lot of hunters. Most were my age or older not many younger. Even my own sons prioritize nearly everything over a hunting trip. At least it looks like you and the dog had a good time

Mosquitoes, wet dogs and a tired old man

So I don’t think you were on here then but there used to be a guy on here by the name of Uncle Buck that swore by the Pudelpointer breed. He used to get in it with guys on here, usually Lab guys about how superior his dogs were. I was still in my flushing lab obsession and found it hard to...

Old dogs still want to retrieve

One of my worst hunting experiences was the day I overworked my 12 year old lab. He was having a day and went pretty hard like he was a youngster. He seemed to be having a blast doing it, I certainly was watching it. What I got that evening was something I never want to experience again. After...

What do you mean it’s not dead yet?

I don’t think that was the case. I think that they were road hunting late in the day and got a little lazy. They were pretty young and didn’t have a tremendous amount of experience. I doubt it happens again.

What do you mean it’s not dead yet?

Witnessed a comical incident at the motel last evening in Mitchell South Dakota. I was driving down from North Dakota and stopped there for the evening about 8 or so. I had Raven up on the tailgate to brush her out and feed her and noticed a young group of hunters that were unloading their truck...

Mosquitoes, wet dogs and a tired old man

Ever hunted pheasants in a mosquito swarm? Holy West Nile Batman they were thick in my eyes, nose, mouth and covering my arms and hands. It was ridiculous but luckily after the first day it got cooler and the wind picked up. Here are a few highlights of a week in North Dakota. My original plan...

Young lab isn't retrieving this season

100 percent that is a good way to make it worse. Personally I would kennel the dog while working and praising another dog. Once you get him good and pissed off he can come out and try some for himself. Goose I am certain you can find a low brow, ass grabbing Gucci guy at one of your pheasant...

    Damned Quill PIgs

No doubt, I have had plenty of porky/ skunk incidents…. As to the badger holes, I swear if there is only one in a field I will find it

    The dog caught a pheasant

You primarily hunt public land that is pressured. I would imagine you to have a smaller catch rate than a private ground hunter. The last black Lab I had was very aggressive in his flush and he caught at least 3or 4 roosters and a few hens. He probably would have caught more but I got to where...

    Pheasant Hunting Report

“ wax lyrical “ the ones that are bothered by that probably don’t even know what that means. As I have grown older I have become more melancholy to the fall. Seeing the graying on your dog gives me that familiar feeling. Keep writing some of us like it

Good Bird report, a new spot to try

That’s nothing…. Twenty years ago I got an intact 20 month old male Lab without asking. He was a field trial failure from a friend of a friend. He had it sold to a guy in Oklahoma but when it was time to take delivery the guys wife put the kabosh on it. The guy put the word out he was heading...

    2025 Season

What I have found is put the do not disturb card on the door then when you leave put a decent tip on the bed. Amazing how forgiving the maid is when she is putting a few bucks in her pocket. I have never had a complaint yet about dogs. Cheaper than the 15-20 a night they try to gig you for
