    Drahthaar experiences

dhuggins: I was a member of VDD/NA for many years, and attended numerous trials. In those years I never once saw a fight between dogs, or any attempt by dogs to fight. I've seen aggressive labs, and GSP's. My best friend had a male springer that was extremely nasty. Bit me twice. There can...

How many of you let birds go?

As some of the above, I always shot young roosters, if I could tell the sex. If they are so young that you can't tell the sex, they probably won't make it thru the winter.

I had Drahts for over 20 yrs. and never had a sharp one. Had a couple that were hell on vermin! Wonderful dogs.

Why did you go with the breed that you did and have you been satisfied?

Went with Drahthaars for 30 yrs. First fell in love with their looks, then discovered VDDGNA. Loved the controlled breeding program. Had 7-8 over the yrs. Never sorry about my choice.

    Winter Scouting

When I lived in Iowa, and hunted phez, I would drive home a different way each time. It didn't matter where I was hunting, I'd drive home different way each time, looking for potential hunting sites. Worked really well.

Worst things that happened while hunting ?

I've had two, that i considered terrible: 1.) My favorite (and best dog) caught in a 330 conibear. Unconscious when released, but came out of it fine. LUCKY me. 2.) Set gun on top of dog box to load dogs. Forgot about gun and drove away. Just coincidently looked in...

What choke is in your gun?

My go to gun for over 30 yrs. was a Browning Liege, choked i/c & i/m. I shot copper sixes the entire season, and never had a problem. I hunted most of that time behind Dratht's in western Iowa/

    Locking/securing Ruffland Kennel

While living in Iowa I had a three dog aluminum dog box. I drilled a hole thru the two back corners, and put in two eye bolts. Next I drilled two holes thru bed of pickup, and inserted two more eye bolts. Put the box back in, and the eye bolts were very close to each other. Then just use a...

Best affordable lodge for a trip?

This is just my opinion from hunting phez for over 40 yrs. Yes, you can shoot phez without a dog, but your opportunities will be greatlly diminished. You need the dog to find those that love to sit and hide, also to find the runners. Without a dog you'll walk by a lot of birds. Also phex is a...

Chokes for wild pheasants in a 16 ga. O/U

For approximately 30 yrs. I shot copper plated 6's, from I/C & I/M. Killed 100+ birds per season. This was over pointing dogs, and a 12 ga.

Do you or don’t you tip housekeeping?

When I lived back east and had to travel (long distances), we always brought gifts. Most of the time was real maple syrup, in pint and quart size. Landowners always got the quart size, and the pints were handed out as needed.

    Funny Looks??

When hunting, and you miss a shot, does your dog give you a funny look? I remember one time pooch tracked a bird for at least 3-4 yds. in heavy cover, and extremely windy. At the end a big rooster got up 20yds. from me, easy shot right! That darn bird got up into that wind and was gone. I fired...

    Best Dogs

Mara, my Drahthar, was my best overall dog. I have been blessed with 4-5 excellent dogs in my lifetime. Over a thousand phez shot over her, (all wild), in her 14 yrs. Only lost 3-4. She's been gone about 14 yrs. now, but I still think of her quite often. It's a shame they don't live longer.

"Sir, we are locked and loaded!"

I can remember day hunts that were birdless, or at least roosterless, when the dogs and I had a great time. We shared a sandwich or whatever I had and just relaxed. Enjoy our great outdoors.
