    New NW Iowa store.

Anyone within a few hours of Spencer Iowa might want to check out this new antique store. Doesn’t seem to have a web site but this is the place: https://www.yelp.com/biz/petersunn-antiques-spencer Basically a museum with price tags, not a junk store by any means. Lots of older firearms of...

Do you take a poke at the long range birds ?

I’m not the best wing shooter I will readily admit. I restrict my shots to those which I have a really good chance at a clean kill, maybe out to 30-40 yards. I’m also not the best judge of distances. My primary shotguns have full or modified fixed chokes, I use 2.75 inch lead 4s mostly. Pretty...

Anyone have bolt action 12 ga experience ?

I’m always on the lookout for something to fiddle with in the shop during the winter. I like to shoot trap with old shotguns and am looking for a bolt action. Seems the Marlin goose guns bring a premium, must be a collector thing. Anyone have any advise on what to look for ? I see the JC...

    Trigger guard opening.

Anyone have a shotgun that has an exceptionally large trigger guard opening ? Hunting today I took my BPS because it has probably the biggest opening of my hunting shotguns. Heavy gloves were needed. If I was deciding between two shotguns, the opening size would be important to me. Companies...

Do we need to get away from plastic ?

I posted some photos earlier related to the amount of spent hulls littering the public hunting area here. While hunting opening day next to a popular waterfowl spot the shooting I could hear was nearly continuous for an hour around opening time. Plastic shells have been around for what, 60...

    Something going on ?

So 6:30 here and I’m on the first cup of coffee. There is a steady line of lights going up and down the road. Something I don’t know about ? Mostly old beat up Fords, missing tail lights.

    Spring Run

I know some of you folks hunt the Spring Run complex in Dickinson county. We have been combining the corn across the fence and man have the birds been flying out of there and into the slough areas. Most I’ve ever seen in a loooong time.

    Taking corn out

I’m thinking most all the corn will be out by the time opening day. Seeing a good amount of birds, not much different than last year. Seeing some softball sized birds, thought they were partridge but then the hen got up.

A map showing the federally owned property that MAY go up for sale

For your information, what the eventual outcome will be is anyone’s guess. Any ground on this map you are familiar with ? https://www.wilderness.org/articles/blog/congress-making-more-250-million-acres-public-lands-available-sale The map is showing 250 million acres, the sale is estimated to...

Looks like NRCS is going to have some major cuts.

This is a huge budget, and I don’t feel informed enough to make comments yet. Some of these cuts may be moved to other agencies as I understand. The budget: https://www.usda.gov/sites/default/files/documents/2026-usda-budget-summary.pdf NRCS section is pictured here.

    CRP species mix question

What are folks in other counties seeing for a species mix for the CRP acres they have enrolled ? I seeded another 5 acres yesterday, beautiful conditions and now a nice rain today, should get a good stand. We have an excellent staff at out county NRCS office, hope we can keep them. Gone are...

    Early heat not good.

I always try to delay first hay cutting as long as possible. The alfalfa money making fields can wait only so long however, quality declines rapidly. Usually when we cut alfalfa we find about a third nesting, a third just hatched and a third baseball sized fliers. This year alfalfa in northern...

    Federal land use.

I have family employed by an agency that manages federal lands. Water cooler talk is that the feds are going to be considering raising money for the talked about sovereign fund by selling land, making more leases for timber and minerals. Public land is a cornerstone of the outdoor recreation...

    Shed dogs ?

No, not sled dogs, but rather dogs trained to find antler sheds. Anyone ever around one ? See one work ? I’ve read about them and I think this time of year that would a great way to get some exercise and watch a dog work. Can they smell them for a distance like a bird dog ? Or do they have to...

    Doing an inventory

Wanted to update the inventory for insurance purposes, make, model, serial number, condition, who it is supposed to go to, all that. It’s been a while. Made the mistake of letting the list lay on the kitchen table. “Is this a list of all the shotguns you have ??? !!!” Don’t be silly...

    Refinished my 720

    Future of CRP ?

I’m thinking with the cost cutting talk in Washington that new CRP contracts might be in doubt. I have some EQUIP contracts in the works, we will see.

Never been able to shoot the model 12 well.

I like to shoot a lot of older guns at the trap range. I’ve never been able to get the model 12 to shoot like the others, always forget to cover up the target. Well High Plains Gunstocks have a bunch of gunstocks that fit so I ordered a very plain Jane basic set. I honestly don’t care for a lot...

    Many of us are pigs.

I’m sure it’s just waterfowlers, and certainly no one here. Each spring the grandkids and I pick up trash around the lakeshore. Probably a half mile of shore line we usually get two bags of trash. Each year. Am I the only one who makes every reasonable effort to pick up my spent shells ? This...
