Help me plan a trip to NoDak

You are correct about the maps and the posting. You won't see a lot of unposted land within an hour of Bismarck. Bismarck is certainly in the middle of pheasant country. Fair amount of public land and good amount of hunters. You mentioned being interested in huns, not a ton of them around here.

Help me plan a trip to NoDak

Depends. Some will (if you can find them), some won't. I think a good chunk will give permission at some point, but it might depend on the time of year, if they have cattle around, if they have people already hunting that week, etc.

Help me plan a trip to NoDak

As mentioned, those areas are the electronically posted areas and in my experience maybe 25% have a phone number listed. Keep in mind land can also be posted with signs and in most areas of the state I'd estimate that about 90% of land is posted. The ArcGIS app for your phone is pretty good...

Help me plan a trip to NoDak

Sharptails get difficult to hunt come October - very tough to get close to. If you are needing a motel, mid/late October is going to be the most difficult time with that being the busiest time for nonresident waterfowl and pheasant. I wouldn't expect to be able to just call ahead a few days to...

Help me plan a trip to NoDak

I'd agree with what has been mentioned here; sharpies are pretty much throughout the state if you have grass (which the eastern third doesn't have a lot of in most areas). Huns more in the western third but seem like they'd be tough to specifically target, but I know guys do it. My grandfather...

Changing an unconstitutional law in North Dakota

I pheasant hunt any free time I get all season long, but I can't say I'd be in big favor of going through January. Perhaps give another week or say it closes the sunday closest to Jan. 10 (the years that Jan. 1 falls on a Sunday it can kind of stink closing that day since a lot of people have...

    Hunting during deer season

I don't recall a pheasant hunter being shot by a deer hunter but I suppose it's happened. Can't imagine hardly anyone would go without at least a hat and some on the vest. I put an orange vest on the dog too, which I'm more worried about than myself as some road hunter could think it's a...

    Out of Towner Questions

You're on the right track and most of the advice is accurate. Private access will be tough but it usually is and I wouldn't expect to find much unposted land. I wouldn't worry about deer hunters too much especially if you aren't hunting on a weekend. Tag numbers are way down and the public...

    Early Spring Observations

Today could be a pivotal day for our hatch. Most of the state in the 50's for highs (barely) and wet. Frost advisory for the western third of the state, pretty rare for June 18.

ND - End Of January 2024

Most of ND isn't supposed to get a huge amount from this storm - 5-10" south of I94. Looks like the eastern half of SD is due to get 12+. The moisture will definitely outweigh any negatives in the bird world.

    Ice - SE/SC ND area

Fortunately there was very little snow on the ground prior to the ice storm and it was around 30 & sunny for a couple days after it so it should have loosened up a bit. I wouldn't expect this alone to be a big killer.

    That too!

    Birds up….

I'll happily eat crow here...hard to believe those increases but happy to see them. I do think our coolish late July/early August with lots of dew had to have a big impact on the counts.

    Central North Dakota Sharptail Outlook

Should be a fairly normal year I would l think - winter was brutal in that part of the state but sharpies are pretty tough. Precip and rearing weather have been pretty favorable this summer it seems.

Hunter Pressure and Harvest by County

I don't believe they publish anything that specific, but you could probably get about what you're looking for by calling the upland biologist. It is sort of nice that not everything can be found on the Internet as it pertains to hunting. I've not hunted much in the far SW of ND (nor have I...

    Lodging Options

Hettinger shows a couple options; Elgin shows an Inn as well. Bowman has a couple options and is about 40 miles from Hettinger. Imagine they fill up pretty solid for hunting season so you might have some trouble at this point. Sparse area so you're not going to find much for accomodations...

    Winter 2022/23

This encapsulates the length of this winter pretty well...beating the previous record by only...72 days!:oops:

    Winter 2022/23

Definitely no geese nesting in ND yet; it feels and looks like January out there. They'll definitely be delayed, so not sure how that affects them.
