    Let's Bitch (Can't Hunt)

People who: -Feel party hunting is OK and continue shooting after they get their limit. -Like to hunt your private spots, but don't want you hunting on theirs. I quit hunting with someone due to these reasons.

    Spring Turkey

Shot this guy on Friday morning. This is the proper way to photograph a jake...lol He came in with 2 of his buddies and I could have shot all 3 of them. After I dropped him, they decided to attack the poor guy. The morning started with a mad hen trying to peck the head off one of my decoys...

    Rate your past season

I had a good season in terms dog work and the number of birds seen and harvested. I got out 24 times, mostly on the weekends, solo, and all on public ground. We averaged slightly over 1 bird per outing and cut our lost bird rate down quite a bit from last year. I attribute this mostly to my 2...

    marking a bird down

I try to find a reference on the horizon to mark the line, and do a decent job of finding the fall area. If no reference point is available, I'll put my hat where I shot from, then try and walk the correct line. I also stop maybe 10-20 yards short so I don't add scent to the fall area, even if...

    Acceptable Loss Rate

I'm curious what others consider an acceptable loss rate, and what you actually count as a lost bird. Obviously we don't want to lose any birds, but it happens. This season I lost 3 of 25 birds for a loss percentage of 12%. These are birds that were knocked down, marked, but the dogs couldn't...

    2022 season photos IOWA

I wrapped up my season today with a shutout but got the dogs on some birds which is always a bonus. All in all, it was a pretty good season for me. I only got out on the weekends except for a few days between Christmas and New Year's Day and hunted 100% public ground. The last couple of weeks...

    Old Breast Wound

I cleaned another bird from Saturday that had a similar, but smaller abscess. It looked like it took a single pellet in the lower breast. The old wound was about an inch long and had some old feathers in it. The thing smelled as bad as the one in the other bird.

After some tough hunts during the week, we were able to connect on a couple of public land roosters this morning. I got to the area at 8:00 and someone beat me to the spot I wanted so I hit a different section. It sounded like he got some shooting too. The birds were holding much tighter...

    Old Breast Wound

I didn't dissect it, but it was all very spongy.

    Old Breast Wound

I just cleaned a rooster I shot yesterday and noticed a hard lump on one of the breast halves. I cut it open and out popped the lump of what I can only assume were old feathers and rotten flesh. It smelled horrible but was contained to that one area. Has anyone seen anything like this? The...

    Benelli M2 - Problem!

I've noticed with my M2 that when it takes excessive force to get the shell in the magazine it's an issue with the trigger assembly alignment, usually after cleaning the gun and reassembling it. Popping out the pin and resetting the trigger assembly usually takes care of the issue. Also, make...

    Bloody Testicles

I had a male Springer that this happened to occasionally, usually when it was really cold out. I know my dogs go to the bathroom often while hunting so not sure if a full body suit would be the answer. In my experience, neutering hasn't had any negative effects on the male dogs I've had. Talk...

Yeah, she's a character for sure and would go all day if the lab and I could keep up...lol Honestly, they work well together in the field and I don't lose many birds between the 2 of them.

New member here from Central Iowa. I thought I'd share a pic of my 2 dogs and a few birds from last weekend. The lab is 4 years and has proven to be a solid pheasant dog. The Springer is almost 2 and she's still learning the game. It's been a good season so far and looking forward to getting...

    Benelli M2 - Problem!

I've been shooting an M2 for about 10 years and the first year or 2 I experienced the "click". I replaced the stock spring with a Wolff spring and started using FP-10 to lube the internals, and haven't had any issues since. My advice is to give it a good cleaning to remove the factory grease...
