    On X question

If you want live data as you drive around then it would need to be GPS enabled, and I'm not sure Kindles have gps. If you know the area you'll be hunting ahead of time then you can download that map from OnX before you head out

2023 Iowa bird hunt pics and/or stories

Springer, and my 1st female dog and 1st black and white springer. All my previous ones were liver and white males.

2023 Iowa bird hunt pics and/or stories

Hit a couple of private spots today and the birds actually cooperated and sat tight for the most part. I only took my springer as I felt she needed some 1:1 time. My lab wasn't too happy, but it ended up being a great decision as she did great on her own. The 1st place we hit produced 9 hens...

    Mild weather hunting

Agreed 100%. I only whistle (I don't use an actual whistle) or use the tone feature on the e-collar to turn the dogs when we're hunting, unless they really make me mad :D I bumped into another hunter a couple of weeks ago that had a bell on his dogs collar. We spoke for a minute, then I headed...

Gear That Lasted At Least A Decade?

I have a 30+ year old Farm and Fleet "carhart" knockoff coat that I still wear pheasant hunting. I bought it in Brainerd MN during an October fishing trip on Mille laks. It's ratty, but it's still the warmest coat I've ever owned.

    Warm + No Snow

I agree 100%. We do have some rain in the forecast Friday/Saturday for Central Iowa which should at least help the scenting conditions for the dogs on Saturday. I'd much prefer snow though.

    Losing confidence in dog

I started the thread about a dogs "aha" moment which was specific to my 2 1/2 year old female ESS. This is her 2nd full season and she is very good at finding dead birds, but is still figuring out the live birds. I also hunt with my 5 year old male black lab and it took him a couple of seasons...

    Dinners served

I have an electric Masterbilt and it might be the worst smoker ever. It doesn't hold a steady temp, only goes to 190 degrees max, and doesn't really produce a good smoke. I use an external temp gauge to monitor the temp of the smoker and have resorted to using an A-Maze-N smoke maze with...

    A Dogs "aha" Moment

It seemed to happen with my female ESS yesterday. This is her 2nd full season and I was getting a little concerned with her figuring out the wild rooster game. She's been great after the shot finding and retrieving birds, and locating cripples that would have normally been lost birds, and that...

    Hunting this weekend

I go to areas where people don't typically deer hunt. If I happen to see any deer hunters I'll move on. The only time I've been concerned with deer hunters is when I was duck hunting and saw a bunch of orange vests on the opposite shore pushing a tree line.

    Golden Retriever question

I don't see many around here, but I also try and avoid the crowds when hunting. I watched a couple of episodes of the Wentz (Carson) Brothers hunting show this weekend and one of them has a golden retriever. In the episodes I watched they were duck hunting and the dog was making some solid...

2023 Iowa bird hunt pics and/or stories

I went out both Saturday and Sunday morning on different public areas, and there weren't many other hunters out which was surprising considering how many people were out the first couple of weeks. That said, I think all of the early pressure has made the birds more skittish and prone to run and...

    Retrieving

I have a similar issue with my 100# male lab and 45# female springer, but she always brings me back the bird so I let it slide. We often hunt heavy cattails and it's hard to monitor exactly where the dogs are in relationship to a downed bird so it's hard to correct. I'm just happy they find...

    Iowa report from today

Got out Sat morning for a couple of hours on public in the Central part of the state and got 1. Same story as the previous weeks, the roosters were running and/or flushing way out ahead. We tried the shorter grass first, then dove into the cattails and started kicking up a lot of birds, but...

Unpopular opinion - dog caught a hen

It seems like a lot of work on the warden's part for a dead hen. What are the odds of him/her actually driving to an area to pick up a dead hen, especially if it's in the middle of a 200+ acre parcel? Just doesn't make sense with them being so shorthanded these days. I'm curious if anyone on...

    Lab Won't Retrieve Birds

It sounds like a frustrating situation. I'm curious if you introduced her to birds when she was a young pup? When my dogs are pups I started each with a freshly killed pigeon about once a day for a week, then move on to a clipped wing pigeon, then a full flier. My goal is to make them bird...

Pheasant tips and my plan for the weekend.

I just hunt the road ditches bordering the game farms. Once they get outside of the property line they're wild birds. Win/Win

    Iowa Opener

I went out around 10:00 like every other opener to avoid the crowds, but nearly every parking lot was full to my surprise. I found an area to hunt and found birds, but the roosters were running and getting up on the edge of gun range. I got a couple of shots but didn’t connect. The 1st...
