    Boss shotgun ammunition

When I hunted, ALWAYS used copper plated 6's. Usually Federal, used them day 1 and last day, and all days in-between. Never, ever did I have any problems.

    Youth Season

Weimdogman: Just an analogy. Kids go thru driver ed. and learn all the safety issues, but do they follow them after they get their licenses? I'm glad you have had great success, we didn't.

    Youth Season

Best of luck. The chapter of PF that I belonged to use to take out kids . It was NOT pleasant! The kids were wild, and wouldn't listen. They were also dangerous. Over the years we stopped two or three hunts because of safety issues, and not listening. Have your head on a swivel.

    GWP

GWP's, typically are not big running, or fast. While they're not plodders, but are thorough covering ground. They are wonderful dogs! There are other breeds that would suit you better.

    Cut pad

Not ideal but you could buy doggie boots. If you do, take the time for your dog to get accustomed to them.

    Porcupines On The Prairies

Hunted Iowa for over 35 years, (lived there for over 20 years) and never saw or heard of any porkers. Doesn't mean there isn't any, just never saw any. Good luck.

At what point do you retire your dog?

Any birddog worth it's salt will have a strong desire until the moment he/she dies. That doesn't mean it can! We cannot expect any of our pooches to go as strong as they once did, once they get to certain ages. The age will vary by genetics, and the type of life, and care they've had. Like...

At what point do you retire your dog?

Well, here's my .02 cents. It should be on you. When you're hunting an older dog, be observant! Watch for signs that he/she are struggling. You know your dog better then anyone, the signs are there, just look for them. There is not a gamebird in existence that's worth pushing your dog to hard...

    Need Help on Gun Upgrade!

Brand & type of gun are not important. That's up to the buyer, what is important is FIT. It matters not of Brand or type if it doesn't FIT. Best of luck.

    Bumping birds at dusk?

Everybody will view this differently. When I lived in Iowa I never hunted when either the weather was bad, or about to become bad! I was retired and hunted most every day of the season, (weather permitting). I felt the birds had it bad enough without me making it worse. Do what your conscience...

    Hunting 2 dogs

Jonmac, just remember Murphy's law? Your female will come into heat for 3 weeks during phez season (?). You will lose one or the other of your dogs during this time.

    Hunting 2 dogs

I hunted multiple dogs for many years, both same sex, so no problems. Went on out of state trip with friend who had a female, I brought a young male. The female was in heat (unbeknownst to either of us). My male would not hunt at all, he only had love on mind. Could not use him at all. Was a...

Here's a new thing I learned about biology today

Bob, don't know about other studies, but it's a known fact that pheasants will renest if brood is lost. Each succeeding brood will be smaller by a fair percentage, (50-60%).
